It is possible for the general air of anticipation surrounding 22 Jump Street to get much hotter, at this stage? Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller are fresh off releasing their critical/box office smash, The LEGO Movie earlier this year; most of the trailers released for the film thus far have offered plenty of laughs, often managing to avoid recycling those from past clips; and, judging by the initial wave of reviews, the 21 Jump Street sequel isn’t afflicted with the Hangover Part II curse – and is very much a meta-action/comedy sequel, in the best way possible
However, in case you need more convincing – or just want something to help tide you over until release day – Sony has unveiled a new 22 Jump Street red band trailer that is meant for international audiences, following the launch of the final U.S. red band promo a couple months back. In case you’re just tuning in: the 21 Jump Street sequel picks back up with buddy cops Jenko (Channing Tatum) and Schmidt (Jonah Hill), who get a chance to work together undercover once more – this time, infiltrating a college drug ring, instead of one based in high school.
And yes – in the sequel, the Jump Street team headquarters have, quite literally, moved across the street from their old base in the first movie.
Much like 21 Jump Street played with the concept of Jenko and Schmidt reverting to a high school mentality while undercover (albeit, in unexpected ways), it appears as though the pair find themselves reliving their college days in the sequel – though, not always in the way that they would prefer. It’s not a re-invention of the wheel, so to speak, but it does appear as though 22 Jump Street compliments the first installment, thematically-speaking – while still providing all the dildo jokes and 4th wall knocking that you could ask for.
Credit for that goes to Lord and Miller, along with 22 Jump Street screenwriters Michael Bacall (returning from the first movie), Rodney Rothman (Grudge Match), and Oren Uziel (Mortal Kombat: Rebirth). Add brief, but funny, appearances from supporting cast members who were also in 21 Jump Street (Ice Cube, Nick Offerman, etc.) – along with what looks to be a scene-stealing turn by Jillian Bell (Workaholics) – and it seems as though the final result is poised to become another winner for this surprise hit franchise.
