Yellowstone spinoff 1923 stars Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren tease the upcoming prequel’s ‘juicy’ story details. Created by Taylor Sheridan, the Paramount+ hit Yellowstone, which follows the Dutton family as they run their impressively large ranch, debuted in 2018 and is currently in its fifth season. Sheridan’s Yellowstone universe previously expanded into spinoff territory with 2021’s 1883, which chronicled the Dutton family’s travel to and settlement in Montana. The next Yellowstone spinoff will depict a new generation of Duttons, featuring Ford as Jacob and Mirren as Cara Dutton.

The previously released teaser and trailers for 1923 have indicated that the upcoming spinoff will introduce audiences to the darkest Dutton story to date, with plenty of violence and action promised in the prequel. While speaking to Deadline during the red carpet for the 1923 premiere at the Hollywood American Legion Post 43, lead actors Ford and Mirren offered brief teases of what viewers can expect in the spinoff series, providing a few details on their characters. Mirren honed in on the pair’s strong, collaborative partnership, while Ford expressed that the family’s survival will spawn a “juicy, juicy story.” See what they had to say below:

Mirren: “We’re presenting a couple who [in a] relationship [that] when it’s gone that long becomes a partnership. And so, they are partners as much as anything, of course, they’re husband and wife but they’re real kind of equal partners in which you would have to be dealing with that kind of environment.”

Ford: “He’s a man, he’s a rancher in 1923, in unique circumstances with a unique history, personal history. And this is the story of what it has taken to survive, for that person to survive its complicated moral context and it’s a juicy, juicy story and I love it.”

1923 Is Already So Different From Yellowstone Prequel 1883

The acclaimed stars’ enthusiasm for the upcoming series sets a high bar, which 1923 is poised to meet based on the information released thus far about the spinoff. Though 1883 earned positive reviews and critical acclaim, it’s essential for the two shows to feel tonally different to justify their existence within Sheridan’s growing Yellowstone universe. Luckily, 1923 appears to be a very different show than the similarly star-studded, moody frontier drama that followed the post-Civil War Duttons.

In 1923, the Duttons will neither be as new to the land as they were in 1883 nor as established a ranching family as they are in Yellowstone, which takes place several generations later. Determined to defend their homestead, Jacob and Cara are prepared to go to war for the land in the trailers for 1923, which is just one of the many hardships they will face in the new series. With its 1920s setting, 1923 will see the family reckon with several pressing historical issues, including the Great Depression, rising cattle theft, prohibition, and drought.

Along with the turmoil the Duttons will face in 1923, the series will explore the extreme juxtaposition that existed in society at the time, brought to life by Timothy Dalton’s sophisticated villain character Donald Whitfield, who could be bringing the Roaring ’20s to the Yellowstone universe. With the glitz and glamour appearing in an otherwise seemingly dark and often violent series, 1923 could be the most fascinating Yellowstone property to date. 1923 will have eight episodes, the first of which will debut on Paramount+ on December 18.
