15 Best MCU Villain Quotes From 16 Years Of Marvel Movies

15 Best MCU Villain Quotes From 16 Years Of Marvel Movies

Some of the most memorable quotes in the 16-year history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been delivered by the franchise’s most notable villains. Every good superhero movie needs a formidable villain to bring out the best qualities in the hero, and Marvel Studios has adapted some of the most powerful, threatening, and captivating villains into live-action in the MCU. Since 2008’s Iron Man debuted Obadiah Stane’s Iron Monger, dozens of exciting villains have appeared in the MCU, including some of Marvel Comics’ most iconic foes, such as Red Skull, Loki, Ultron, Kang the Conqueror, and the Mad Titan Thanos.

Marvel Studios’ heroes have delivered some of the MCU’s most poignant and significant quotes, including “I am Iron Man,” “I can do this all day,” and “If we can’t protect the Earth, you can be damn well sure we’ll avenge it.” However, the MCU’s villains have also provided memorable quotes, often proving how terrifying they can be, or explaining their nefarious intentions. Ranging from grounded antagonists, such as Alexander Pierce, Darren Cross and Wilson Fisk, to sinister, otherworldly opponents, including Thanos, Kaecilius and He Who Remains, Marvel Studios’ villains have always found the right words to make their message heard.

“People Think In Terms Of Good And Evil, When Really, Time Is The True Enemy Of Us All. Time Kills Everything.”

Kaecilius In Doctor Strange (2016)

Kaecilius was given the opportunity to explain his actions after being restrained by Doctor Strange in the New York Sanctum back in 2016’s Doctor Strange. This saw him claim that good and evil are abstract constructs, while time is the “enemy of us all.” Strange understands what Kaecilius is saying, and may even agree with him, but won’t stand for the villain’s ambitions to allow the Dark Dimension to consume the Earth. Kaecilius’ words perhaps foreshadowed Doctor Strange’s use of the Time Stone, which would ultimately enable Strange to thwart Kaecilius and Dormammu’s plans, but only by breaking natural laws.

“The Laws Of Nature Transcend The Laws Of Man, And I’ve Transcended The Laws Of Nature.”

Darren Cross’ Yellowjacket In Ant-Man (2015)

Darren Cross may be one of the MCU’s most forgettable villains, but the scene in which he reduces Frank, a potential buyer for his size-changing Yellowjacket suit, to goo sticks out as one of the franchise’s most gruesome moments. Cross’ ego is put on full display here, as he claims he has “transcended the laws of nature,” proving exactly why Hank Pym didn’t want his Pym Particles falling into Cross’ hands. This ego would eventually be Cross’ downfall, as Scott Lang bested him in 2015’s Ant-Man by using his intelligence, sending Cross into the Quantum Realm where he’d become MODOK.

“You Really Think That Just Because You Have An Idea, It Belongs To You?”

Obadiah Stane’s Iron Monger In Iron Man (2008)

Obadiah Stane was introduced as the first on-screen villain in the MCU, and while he seems insignificant compared to latter antagonists, he was a great dark mirror to Tony Stark’s Iron Man. Stane’s envy of Stark’s rise to prominence was evident at this moment, as he suggested Stark’s own ideas don’t belong to him just because he envisioned them, specifically the creation of a miniature arc reactor. The fact that Stane had to steal Stark’s arc reactor to accomplish his mission, rather than designing his own, proves just how little he really was, and puts Stark’s genius on full display.

“Don’t Ever Apologize For Being The Smartest One In The Room.”

Quentin Beck’s Mysterio In Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)

In the wake of Tony Stark’s sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame, Peter Parker needed a new mentor in 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Quentin Beck’s Mysterio filled this void perfectly. Initially, Mysterio claimed to be from another universe, and quickly earned Parker’s respect and admiration by calling him the “smartest one in the room.” This began Quentin Beck’s ploy to earn Parker’s trust, allowing him to twist it later on, but was also a comment on Beck’s own self-image, as he imagined himself as the smartest person in the room. Ultimately, however, Spider-Man proved that he, indeed, was far smarter.

“To Build A Really Better World Sometimes Means Having To Tear The Old One Down, And That Makes Enemies.”

Alexander Pierce In Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)

HYDRA is one of the longest-running villain groups in the MCU’s history, and the organization has been represented by many different faces over the years. In 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Alexander Pierce was the face of HYDRA, masquerading as a high-ranking member of SHIELD who attempted to frame Steve Rogers’ Captain America for Nick Fury’s death at the hands of the Winter Soldier. Pierce showed his true colors early on, suggesting that SHIELD needed to tear down the old world to build a new, better one, when, in fact, this was HYDRA’s intention with the Project Insight program.

“You Want To Protect The World But You Don’t Want It To Change. How Is Humanity Saved If It’s Not Allowed To Evolve?”

Ultron In Avengers: Age Of Ultron (2015)

Despite being considered as the weakest Avengers project in the MCU, 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron still delivered a sinister adversary in the artificial intelligence Ultron. Ultron aspired to eradicate the Avengers, seeing the superhero team as the problem with the world, as their intervention in major events stunted change and evolution. Unfortunately, Ultron may have been right, but his goal of rendering humanity extinct was certainly something that the Avengers needed to thwart. Ultron almost succeeded in his mission, and ultimately caused the cracks that would later break up the Avengers, so perhaps his vision did come to fruition.

“It’s Maddening, Isn’t It? The Voice In Your Head. Relentless, Forever Unsatisfied.”

Arthur Harrow In Moon Knight Episode 1, “The Goldfish Problem” (2022)

Marvel Studios’ Moon Knight series was one of the most popular additions to the MCU’s Phase 4, even though one of Marvel Comics’ most obscure and lesser-known villains, Arthur Harrow, took center-stage. After Harrow met Steven Grant, one of Marc Spector’s alters, in Eastern Europe, he approached the British Everyman at his work, and began to tease his history as the avatar of the Egyptian God Khonshu. Harrow somehow knew Spector was Khonshu’s new avatar, and attempted to relate to the trauma that Spector and Grant must be experiencing, though only managed to demonstrate his sinister nature and nefarious goals.

“I’ll Kill You And Everyone You Love. That’s What I’ll Do To Protect My Family.”

Adrian Toomes’ Vulture In Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

Following his debut in Captain America: Civil War, 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming officially brought Peter Parker’s Spider-Man into the MCU, and pitted him against Adrian Toomes’ Vulture. Despite using stolen alien technology to expand his criminal enterprise, Adrian Toomes was a regular family man, and this was no more evident than it was during this scene. After driving his daughter, Liz, and Parker to the Homecoming dance, Toomes realizes Parker is Spider-Man, and nonchalantly threatens his life and the lives of everyone he loves if the wall-crawler continues to interfere with his business, creating one of the MCU’s most bone-chilling moments.

“You Pretend To Be A Simple Soldier, But In Reality, You Are Just Afraid To Admit That We Have Left Humanity Behind.”

Johann Schmidt’s Red Skull In Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)

Just as Tony Stark and Obadiah Stane were two sides of the same coin, Steve Rogers’ perfect dark mirror was Johann Schmidt’s Red Skull. This moment in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger saw Schmidt remove his mask for the first time, revealing the burnt, red face beneath. His deformed appearance perhaps added to his belief that he had risen above humanity, driven to corruption because of the unrefined super soldier serum in his blood. The fact that Rogers is a “simple soldier” proves why he was the perfect Captain America, and Red Skull’s ego is what eventually defeats him.

“Bury Me In The Ocean With My Ancestors Who Jumped From Ships, ‘Cause They Knew Death Was Better Than Bondage.”

Erik “Killmonger” Stevens In Black Panther (2018)

Killmonger is widely regarded as one of the MCU’s most significant villains, most notably because he was actually right in his intentions, and even convinced T’Challa to change his ways, and alter how Wakanda presents itself to the rest of the world. Despite some awful visual effects, Killmonger’s death is a very memorable moment in the MCU, as he discusses his strife with T’Challa, while looking out over Wakanda’s stunning sunset. This was an incredibly powerful moment that summed up the message of 2018’s Black Panther perfectly, and allowed Chadwick Boseman and Michael B. Jordan to showcase their raw talent.

“An Empire Toppled By Its Enemies Can Rise Again, But One Which Crumbles From Within? That’s Dead. Forever.”

Baron Helmut Zemo In Captain America: Civil War (2016)

Baron Helmut Zemo knew that he couldn’t use strength to defeat the Avengers, but could use his intelligence and impressive manipulation skills to divide them. This was summed up beautifully during his interaction with Steve Rogers in Captain America: Civil War’s final moments, as Zemo played the tape of Tony Stark’s parents’ deaths to drive a wedge between the two leaders of the Avengers, and mark the downfall of the superhero team. Of course, the Avengers later reformed, so Zemo wasn’t completely right, but he was far more successful at defeating the team than other, more powerful, villains had been.

“You Can’t Get To The End Until You’ve Been Changed By The Journey.”

He Who Remains In Loki Season 1, Episode 6, “For All Time. Always.” (2021)

Marvel Studios’ Loki series on Disney+ gifted viewers a first look at a variant of Kang the Conqueror in the MCU’s Multiverse Saga. He Who Remains was revealed as the man-behind-the-curtain of the Time Variance Authority, who had been scheming to get Loki and Sylvie to his Citadel at the right moment. When questioned why he’d gone through so much effort, he claimed, “you can’t get to the end until you’ve been changed by the journey.” While this was poignant at the time, this carries a deeper meaning after Loki season 2’s finale, as Loki has well-and-truly been changed now.

“I’m Not The Samaritan… I’m Not The Priest, Or The Levite… I Am The Ill Intent…”

Wilson Fisk’s Kingpin In Daredevil Season 1, Episode 13, “Daredevil” (2015)

Marvel Studios recently confirmed Marvel Television’s Defenders Saga as canon to the MCU, meaning Wilson Fisk’s dramatic speech in Daredevil season 1’s finale now officially occurs in the MCU’s timeline. Relating the story of the Good Samaritan, Fisk’s Kingpin referred to himself as the “ill intent who set upon the traveler on a road that he should not have been on,” rather than the Samaritan, the priest, or the Levite. This was a chilling moment that showcased Vincent D’Onofrio’s talent fantastically, and proved just how intimidating Fisk really is, particularly after embracing his role as Kingpin in Daredevil season 2.

“Perfectly Balanced, As All Things Should Be.”

Thanos In Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

The Mad Titan, Thanos, was set up throughout the Infinity Saga as the MCU’s overarching antagonist, and this came to a head in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War. A flashback showed the beginning of his father-daughter relationship with Gamora, and highlighted his mission to bring balance to the universe. After gifting the young Gamora a perfectly balanced blade, Thanos claimed this is how “all things should be,” teasing his eventual quest to wipe out half the universe’s population. This also tragically put Thanos’ intentions with Gamora on display, as he raised her to be a formidable weapon, just like her blade.

“I Am Loki Of Asgard, And I Am Burdened With Glorious Purpose.”

Loki In The Avengers (2012)

While Thanos was the primary villain of the entire Infinity Saga, Loki, the Asgardian God of Mischief and Thor’s adoptive brother, was the first foe of the MCU’s Avengers team back in 2012. At this time, Loki hoped to invade Earth and acquire Infinity Stones for Thanos, which he believed to be his “glorious purpose.” Loki quickly proved his power, taking over the minds of Clint Barton and Erik Selvig, but Loki’s true glorious purpose didn’t become clear until Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which saw Loki transform from one of the longest-running villains into a powerful superhero.
