When Syfy announced it was adapting Terry Gilliam’s 1995 sci-fi thriller Twelve Monkeys (itself an adaptation of the 1962 short film La Jetée), it was a safe to say more than a few people were somewhat skeptical. After all, like many Gilliam movies, Twelve Monkeys found an enthusiastic fan base devoted to the film’s twisty notions of time, destiny, and madness, and a television adaptation may have seemed an unlikely source to continue (or retell) the story presented in the film.

As is sometimes the case, however, 12 Monkeys proved to be a smart take on the story of James Cole and the plague that ravaged the world, leaving the fate of mankind in the hands of the few who have harnessed the ability to travel through time.

The series brought season 2 to a close last year and is currently gearing up for season 3, which is due to premiere sometime in the spring. Not many details about the upcoming season’s storyline have been released, but what has is in conjunction with some exciting casting news. Not only is former Battlestar Galactica star James Callis joining the cast as a fellow time traveler, but the one and only Christopher Lloyd has signed up as well. The Back to the Future star will play Zalmon Shaw, “a charming but deadly cult leader who preys upon other’s tragedies and losses in order to recruit new members into the Army of the 12 Monkeys.”

Lloyd’s addition to the cast couldn’t have come at a better time, as a new season 3 image, first released by EW, shows James, Amanda, Deacon, and Jennifer going back in time to the ’80s for a little adventure. And to top it all off, James’s outfit is distinctly inspired by one Marty McFly.

Fans are likely wondering what brings the crew back to the ’80s, and as EW states, it sounds as though there’s a heist brewing in the past. What it is the team is looking to lift is uncertain at this point in time, but it likely has something to do with their quest to stop the apocalypse and intercept the time traveler known as the Witness. The crew has been seeking the mysterious character throughout time for a while now, and although their efforts to locate the Witness and prevent humankind’s devastation have been ultimately fruitless, they’ve definitely resulted in more than a few entertaining hiccups in and trips through the time stream.
