12 Greatest Zorro Movies & TV Shows, Ranked

Zorro has been adapted to film and TV dozens of times, but in those adaptations, the character has been portrayed with varying degrees of faithfulness. Originally, the masked vigilante was first unveiled to the world in a novel by Johnston McCulley in 1919. It was then developed into a film the following year, increasing its popularity extensively. Zorro’s popularity inspired McCulley to continue writing more stories focused on the character, and by the time he passed away, he had written five serialized stories and 57 short stories.

Zorro was one of the first fictional characters to perform acts of heroism as a masked hero and lead a double life with a secret identity. The character serves as an inspiration to characters like Batman and The Lone Ranger, with whom he shares several similarities, and in turn, the character draws inspiration from historical legends such as Robin Hood, who also put down the rich and helped the poor. Seeing how popular masked heroes are today, it’s no wonder why Zorro became a sensation that inspired dozens of adaptations and other works.
