10 Star Wars Cliffhangers That Are The WORST (But We Love Them)

10 Star Wars Cliffhangers That Are The WORST (But We Love Them)

Star Wars is a series famed for its memorable cliffhangers. After all, between movies in a trilogy, it stands to reason there should be unanswered questions waiting to be answered in the following films. Sometimes, these cliffhangers are resolved relatively quickly. Other times, however, viewers are left waiting for the answers they crave for many years.

The movie trilogies, however, are not the only parts of the Star Wars franchise with powerful cliffhangers. The many Star Wars TV shows are just as good at leaving the right questions unanswered. These cliffhangers have left fans wanting more, some of which have been answered and some of which to this day have not paid off.

10 Who Was The Stable Boy At The End Of The Last Jedi?

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Broom Boy in Star Wars The Last Jedi

When Star Wars: The Last Jedi initially released, it seemed to be telling a very specific story about the Force and who can use it. At a time when Rey was still nobody, it seemed as though Star Wars was making a change from focusing on the Skywalker saga to pointedly saying that anyone could be a powerful Jedi. The end of the movie sees a slave boy on Canto Bight named Temiri Blagg pull a broom towards him using the Force, and this seems to build on the idea. It’s unknown whether Lucasfilm will ever revisit the so-called “Broom Boy,” but in a way it’s better not to do so – reinforcing the movie’s point.

Solo: A Star Wars Story

Star Wars Qi'ra and Darth Maul

Making a surprise appearance at the end of Han Solo’s origin movie, Darth Maul appears as the secret figurehead of the criminal organization Crimson Dawn. In this ending scene after the death of Dryden Vos, Qi’ra becomes Darth Maul’s second in command. With so many possibilities for the two as a villain duo, and excitement over the return of Darth Maul to the silver screen, this cliffhanger started a buzz. Though the story of Darth Maul and Qi’ra has continued in the Star Wars comics, they have yet to return to the screen.

8 Ezra Bridger Opens The Sith Holocron

Star Wars Rebels Season 2, Episode 22 “Twilight of the Apprentice”

Ezra Bridger Sith Holocron Star Wars Rebels Dark Side

In an exciting season finale, “Twilight of the Apprentice” sees Ezra Bridger, Ahsoka Tano, and Kanan Jarrus teaming up with Darth Maul against Darth Vader and the Empire. The group fight over the possession of a Sith Holocron, a powerful relic that can only be accessed using the dark side of the Force. At the end of the episode, Ezra does just that. What he saw inside would not be revealed until the following season.

7 Ahsoka Tano And Sabine Wren Leave To Search For Ezra Bridger

Star Wars Rebels Season 4, Episode 16 “Family Reunion – And Farewell”

The Star Wars Rebels series finale served as the perfect ending point for the series, but it left things feeling unfinished. With Ezra Bridger missing following his fight with Grand Admiral Thrawn, both Sabine Wren and Ahsoka Tano dedicated themselves to finding him. This plot point, which originally aired in 2018, would not be resolved until 2023 with the characters’ return in the live action Ahsoka Disney+ TV show.

6 Moff Gideon Reveals The Darksaber

The Mandalorian Season 1, Episode 8 “Chapter 8: Redemption”

Moff Gideon with the Darksaber

The Mandalorian season 1 initially seems to be its own self-contained adventure. Even with the backdrop of the Empire’s fall, for the most part the story follows the story of Din Djarin and Grogu. This all changes at the end of the The Mandalorian season 1 when Moff Gideon frees himself from the wreckage of a burning ship using the famed Mandalorian weapon, the Darksaber. Questions about how he came into possession of the weapon and what would happen next would swirl until the next season began months later.

5 Grand Admiral Thrawn Is Unleashed Upon The Galaxy

Ahsoka Season 1, Episode 8 “Part Eight: The Jedi, the Witch, and the Warlord”

With the cast of Star Wars Rebels suddenly thrust into live action, Ahsoka often feels most like the animated series’ spiritual successor. Ahsoka season 1’s ending was a cliffhanger in which Grand Admiral Thrawn returned to the main Star Wars galaxy while both Ahsoka Tano and Sabine Wren were left stranded on Peridea. Although this has not yet been resolved, it is likely this will be addressed in the surely-inevitable Ahsoka season 2.

4 Ahsoka Tano Leaves The Jedi

Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 5, Episode 20 “The Wrong Jedi”

Ahsoka leaves the Jedi Order in The Clone Wars

Star Wars: The Clone Wars‘ season 5 finale follows the trial of Ahsoka Tano as she is accused of coordinating an attack on the Jedi Temple. She is stripped of her ranking, her Padawan braid, and even faces the death penalty. Once it is revealed that she was framed by Barriss Offee, she is offered a place with the Jedi but ultimately refuses and leaves the Jedi Order. She leaves on this cliffhanger at the end of the season, leaving viewers to wonder what she would do next until the next season finally began.

3 Rey Offers Luke His Lightsaber

Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens

Throughout Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the Resistance – and, ultimately, Rey – have one mission: to find Luke Skywalker. Although Rey does end up finding him by the end of the movie, he says nothing, with Rey presenting Luke his lightsaber at the top of a very literal cliff. This literal cliffhanger would be resolved to much controversy in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, with Luke taking the lightsaber and throwing it off of the cliff before walking away.

2 Han Solo Is Trapped In Carbonite

The Empire Strikes Back

One of the most iconic images in all of Star Wars is that of Han Solo frozen in carbonite. When he is frozen at the end of The Empire Strikes Back, he is not unfrozen until well into Return of the Jedi. At the time of release, Han Solo’s fate was left in the balance, with his death as a possibility (and Harrison Ford in favor of a fatal end for the scoundrel). Though we now know Han survived this endeavor, when the film first came out, this cliffhanger would have been a particularly compelling one.

1 Darth Vader Is Revealed To Be Luke Skywalker’s Father

The Empire Strikes Back

Darth Vader says 'I am your father' in The Empire Strikes Back

Today, the revelation that Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker’s father is one of the most well known plot points in all of film. However, when the Star Wars sequel first released, this was an incredibly compelling turn of events. In a time before the release of Return of the Jedi, this moment would have left viewers with many questions, including how such knowledge would affect Luke going forward.
