10 Rom-Coms As Taylor Swift Songs

10 Rom-Coms As Taylor Swift Songs

New romantic comedy Wedding Season began streaming on Netflix earlier this month. Like many other romantic comedies, there are heartfelt and emotional feelings tied to it. This is similar to many of Taylor Swift’s most popular songs. Many Swiftie’s know just how whimsical and relatable her lyrics are, which is why they resonate with many popular romantic comedies fans know very well. Many of these films manage to win over fans with the dynamic relationships and flirty banter.

Whether it’s an enemies-to-lovers trope or a friends-to-lovers, fans can connect these films to some of Taylor Swift’s most beloved hits.

Sweet Home Alabama – “This Love” (Taylor’s Version)

10 Rom-Coms As Taylor Swift Songs

One of Reese Witherspoon’s most beloved romantic comedies, Sweet Home Alabama is about reuniting with an old love. And although it doesn’t seem like things were perfect, they still find their way back to one another.

In Taylor Swift’s song, “This Love” resonates with Jake and Melanie since they knew each other when they were young and quickly fell in love. They may have had a moment of separation, but their love is too strong to walk away from. This is similar to the song and the lyrics, “These hands had to let it go free / And this love came back to me.”

The Hating Game – “Dancing With Our Hands Tied”

Josh and Lucy stand beside each other in elevator

Recent romantic comedy, The Hating Game, follows a young man and woman who are at odds over a possible job promotion. When Lucy and Josh realize that they’d rather be in love than be at loggerheads, they still question each other on their motives for their careers. It is similar to some of the best enemies-to-lovers stories fans might be familiar with.

They spend more time together and really get to know one another. This song explores a relationship similar to the feelings the main characters face with their own insecurities taking over their feelings. The words in the song that resonate the most are, “Deep fears that the world would divide us / So, baby, can we dance / Through an avalanche?”

My Best Friend’s Wedding – “Speak Now”

Julianne and Michael smile around group of people

The hit romantic comedy, My Best Friend’s Wedding, starring Julie Roberts, follows Julia’s character Julianne as she realizes that she has feelings for her best friend despite his upcoming marriage to another woman.

Julianne is dead set on sabotaging the wedding because she realizes too late her true feelings for her best friend. The relationships get complicated, which is why this song fits the film best. The song tells the tale of someone who desires to stop the marriage of a man she loves. Taylor Swift sings the lyrics, “You are not the kind of boy / Who should be marrying the wrong girl.”

Someone Great – “Death By A Thousand Cuts”

Netflix’s Someone Great centers around a young woman who recalls her long-term and meaningful relationship through flashbacks. She enlists her best friends for one last adventure before she finally lets go of the relationship and moves away for her career.

Taylor Swift’s song “Death By A Thousand Cuts,” follows the same story of someone who can’t help but think back to a relationship that haunts them. The reminders are everywhere and just like the film, the streets remind her of her relationship, but there’s nothing she can do but move on.

The Wedding Planner – “Treacherous”

The 2001 romantic comedy, The Wedding Planner, follows a wedding planner named Mary who meets a handsome stranger only to learn he’s unavailable and soon to be married to one of her clients.

The song “Treacherous” has a similar theme of wanting to be with someone who is unavailable. The lyrics, “I’d be smart to walk away / But you’re quicksand,” is similar to the feelings Mary goes through in the film. She can’t get away from her love interest. They seem to always find one another, but the timing and consequences seem to push them closer. Their love reminds them that they are meant for one another in the end.

13 Going On 30 – “Come Back… Be Here” (Taylor’s Version)

Jenna and Matt dance thriller scene

13-year-old Jenna wishes she could be 30 and have her life together. However, when she makes the wish, she learns the lesson that is being careful what you wish for. She knows she isn’t ready to grow up just yet when her best friend says he is moving away with his fiancée.

Taylor’s Swift’s song conveys just that. It follows a similar storyline about having it all and losing that love. Jenna realizes her feelings for Matty and wants to be with him in 13 Going On 30. She knows they’ve grown apart as adults and realizes he is the one for her. The song resonates with the idea of someone leaving and thinking back to how it might be too late.

Love, Simon – “Call It What You Want”

Simon and Bram on ferris wheel scene

Love, Simon revolves around a teenager named Simon who lives an average life but hides the fact that he’s gay from his friends and family. He believes it will change everything, so he confides in a mysterious student at his school who is going through the same thing.

Simon fears the aftermath of his coming out. It’s the one thing that holds him back from being himself. However, he finds comfort in his secret online friend. Of course, he falls for him and when his world comes crumbling down, he is the only one he wants to reach out to. A line from the song that resonates well with the film is, “Not because he owns me / But ’cause he really knows me, which is more than they can say.” The film depicts one of the best LGBTQ+ couples in a teen movie.

The Proposal – “‘Tis The Damn Season”

Margaret and Andrew smiling in office

One of Sandra Bullock’s best rom-coms, The Proposal follows book editor Margaret as she blackmails her assistant in order to not get deported. They pretend to date and say they are getting married. She follows him back home where he grew up and learns a lot about him.

“Tis The Damn Season” follows the idea of going back home and being reminded of how life reminds people of their past mistakes or wrong paths. Margaret learns the expectations Andrew has been put under by his life back home. While, the film shows just how Andrew and Margaret butt heads in the beginning, it’s only for a while. They are stuck together and forced to learn more about one another and in time they fall for each other.

Serendipity – “Invisible String”

Sara and Johnathan walking at night in Serendipity

Johnathan and Sara meet one day and spark a connection. After 10 years they contemplate if it is in fact destiny that keeps pushing them together. It’s about fate and what is truly meant for everyone in Serendipity. It is in fact, a rom-com where the guy falls first.

Taylor Swift’s “Invisible String” is about an undeniable connection that keeps pushing a couple together, just like the film. No matter where they found themselves in their lives, Johnathan and Sara felt they had to follow this force to see where they’d end up. And fate brought them back together in the end.

Crazy Rich Asians – “The Last Great American Dynasty”

Nick and Rachel smiled while hugging

Crazy Rich Asians follows a young woman swept away by her boyfriend. When she finally meets his family, they do not approve, as he comes from a long line of wealthy and powerful people. Over the course of the film, she has to decide what’s really important to her and if her relationship can handle the pressure.

The film is similar to Swift’s “Last Great American Dynasty” because they both depict a lifestyle of a very wealthy man and the expectation his family has for him. The family doesn’t agree with the choice he makes when it comes to picking a partner. However, it all works out in this romantic comedy and, like Rebekah Harkness in Swift’s song, the main character doesn’t let anyone judge her.
