10 Power Rangers Replacements Stronger Than The Original Version

There are several Power Rangers who left the team and were replaced by new characters, and many of those Power Rangers replacements were actually stronger than the originals. Power Rangers’ first passage of torch happened in Mighty Morphin season 2’s “The Power Transfer,” during which Jason, Zack, and Trini left the team. It is quite rare for Power Rangers to recast a character, as the franchise established very early on that Ranger powers can be transferred from one character to another.

Power Rangers would sometimes also replace entire teams of Rangers, such as when Power Rangers Turbo’s cast exited the series ahead of season 2. There are also in-universe, story-related Power Rangers changes, such as when Mighty Morphin was rebranded as Zeo. Here are 10 Power Rangers replacements stronger than the original characters, considering both individual Rangers and entire teams.

10 Mighty Morphin’s Tommy White Ranger Form

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers' White Ranger

Tommy Oliver technically replaced himself in Mighty Morphin as the Power Rangers’ sixth Ranger. Tommy originally joined the team as the Green Ranger following his clash with Zordon’s pupils in Mighty Morphin’s “Green With Evil” arc. However, Tommy’s Green Powers, which originated from Rita Repulsa’s corrupted Power Coin, would not last forever. While Zordon and Billy helped Tommy maintain his Green Ranger powers longer than expected, Tommy’s Green Ranger transformation was no more by Mighty Morphin season 2. Without his powers, Tommy left Angel Grove and distanced himself from the Rangers. Fortunately, the Power Rangers’ friends would return just a few episodes later.

Lord Zedd was more powerful than Rita Repulsa, which is why Zordon and Alpha decided to put the mysterious White Light powers to use. According to Zordon, the White Light powers would make Tommy even stronger than he was as the Green Ranger. As such, the White Ranger is more powerful than the Green Ranger. Although the Green Ranger is the most recognizable Tommy Oliver Power Rangers form, the White Ranger was Mighty Morphin’s strongest Ranger.

9 Power Rangers Zeo’s Team

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Power Rangers Zeo

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers ended with season 3, but most of the current Rangers returned for Power Rangers Zeo. The Zeo crystals replaced the Power Coins, all of which had been destroyed in Mighty Morphin season 3. Not only were the Zeo powers stronger than the Dino Power Coins and the Ninjetti Powers, but they were arguably the biggest source of “Morphin Grid energy” in the entire Power Rangers universe. Saying goodbye to the original Power Rangers costumes may have been bittersweet, but in terms of power levels, the Zeo Rangers were an upgrade. “Stronger than before,” the Zeo Rangers fought the Machine Empire, a group of villains stronger than Rita and Zedd.

8 Power Rangers Zeo’s Jason Gold Ranger Form

Trey of Triforia and Jason as Power Rangers Zeo's Gold Ranger

Jason, Power Rangers’ original Red Ranger, returned to the franchise in Power Rangers Zeo. Jason rejoined the Power Rangers as the Gold Zeo Ranger, yet he was not the first to use those powers. Jason replaced Trey of Triforia, the original Zeo Gold Rangers. Trey, who existed in three identical bodies at the same time, was not part of the original Zeo Power Rangers team and only joined the Rangers to assist them in a time of crisis. However, Trey’s unique physiology meant that he could not maintain his three bodies stable while also using the Zeo Gold powers, which is why he needed a replacement.

While not much is known about Trey of Triforia before he assisted the Power Rangers, it is difficult not to conclude that Jason Lee Scott was the better Zeo Gold Ranger. Jason obviously had far more experience protecting Earth from intergalactic threats, not to mention how the original Red Ranger already knew most of the Zeo Power Rangers. Jason was an extremely skillful fighter, plus his body had no problem assimilating the Zeo powers. Jason’s time as the Gold Ranger was short, but he helped the Power Rangers defeat the Machine Empire several times.

7 Power Rangers Lost Galaxy’s Second Pink Ranger Karone

Karone Power Rangers Lost Galaxy's Pink Ranger

Kendrix, Power Rangers Lost Galaxy’s original Pink Ranger, sacrificed herself to prevent the Psycho Pink Ranger from reaching the Savage Sword. Kendrix’s actor, Valerie Vernon, had to exit the show due to a health issue, and Power Rangers Lost Galaxy preferred to introduce a new Pink Ranger rather than recasting the role. Karone, former Power Rangers in Space’s Astronema, joined Terraventure as the new Pink Ranger. Whereas Kendrix was a scientist and not a soldier until she became a Power Ranger, Karone was trained as a fighter since she was a child. During her time as Astronema, Karone was even powerful enough to threaten Dark Specter.

6 Power Rangers S.P.D.’s B-Squad Rangers

Power Rangers SPD's A-Squad Rangers and B-Squad Rangers

All of the main Power Rangers S.P.D. characters are technically Power Rangers replacements. Space Patrol Delta’s original team of Power Rangers, also known as the A-Squad, ended up being a disappointment. The A-Squad Rangers betrayed the S.P.D. and aligned themselves with Emperor Gruumm after a secret mission went wrong. The B-Squad Rangers were the underdogs, unlikely heroes who, in theory, should not have become Power Rangers. However, these five cadets proved to be worthy of being Power Rangers – far more than the A-Squad. The B-Squad Rangers actually defeated the A-Squad Rangers, proving that they were always meant to be Power Rangers.

5 Power Rangers Time Force’s Second Red Ranger Wes

Alex and Wes in Power Rangers Time Force

Wes, Power Rangers Time Force’s second Red Ranger, was initially not ready to become a Power Ranger. The only reason why Wes became the Red Ranger is that he shared genetic similarities with Alex, the original Time Force Red Ranger, who died fighting Ransik. However, after fighting side by side with the Power Rangers, Wes acquired the skills and experience he needed to become a worthy Red Ranger. By the end of Power Rangers Time Force, Wes had arguably surpassed Alex. Wes was central to Ranskik’s defeat, plus he continued to be Time Force’s Red Ranger for decades to come.

4 Power Rangers S.P.D’s Second Red Ranger Sky

Sky becomes the Red Ranger in Power Rangers SPD

Sky Tate replaced Jack Landors as Power Rangers S.P.D.’s Red Ranger. When the B-Squad cadets became the Power Rangers, Jack was by far the best choice to lead the team as the Red Ranger. Sky had been prepared his whole life to lead the S.P.D., yet he was not ready to be a Red Ranger when the series began. Thanks to Jack, Sky evolved as a Ranger and as a potential leader. By the time Jack had to step down as the Red Ranger, Sky was arguably more ready to be a leader than Jack himself was at the beginning of S.P.D. Sky would later become S.P.D’s Earth Based Commander.

3 2017’s Power Rangers Team

Power Rangers 2017 characters

Power Rangers (2017) changed the usual Power Rangers lore in many ways, including by establishing that Zordon and Rita Repulsa were part of an alien Ranger team. In this new version of the Power Rangers universe, Jason, Kimberly, Billy, Zack, and Trini were technically the second generation of Dino Rangers. Not much is known about this original Power Rangers team, except that they were all betrayed and defeated by Green Ranger Rita Repulsa. Zordon’s second team of Rangers, on the other hand, defeated Rita and Goldar, proving themselves to be the better Power Rangers team.

2 Power Rangers Dino Fury’s Team

Dino Fury Pink Ranger Amelia and Dino Fury Blue Ranger Ollie

Similar to the 2017 Power Rangers movie team, Power Rangers Dino Fury’s Rangers were technically replacements for previous heroes. Amelia and Ollie, Dino Fury’ Pink and Blue Rangers, respectively, replaced the original Rafkonian Rangers and joined Red Ranger Zayto to form a new team. Green Ranger Izzie and Black Ranger Javi later completed the team, using the Dino Fury powers left by the other two deceased Rafkonian Rangers. Whereas Zayto and Aiyon’s original team perished against the Sporix monsters, the Dino Fury Rangers of Earth defeated all Sporix monsters and saved the planet from Void Queen. Power Rangers Dino Fury‘s team will now have to take on Lord Zedd.

1 J.J. Oliver

Power rangers jj oliver tommy and kat

J.J. Oliver, Kat and Tommy’s son in Power Rangers, replaced his father as the Green Ranger, sort of. Tommy was close to retiring when J.J. was sent on an undercover mission for the S.P.D., a story covered in the BOOM! comic Soul of the Dragon by Kyle Higgins and Giuseppe Cafaro. Tommy was no longer an active Power Ranger, and his Morphin Master could only be used five more times. J.J. eventually became S.P.D.’s Green Ranger, combining the usual S.P.D. powers with Tommy’s Dragon Shield. Before this, J.J. briefly morphed into the Mighty Morphin Green Ranger, confirming his status as Tommy’s replacement. J.J. Oliver was recently mentioned in Power Rangers: Once & Always.
