10 Popular 1990s Celebs That Would Be Perfect As That ‘90s Show Guest Stars

10 Popular 1990s Celebs That Would Be Perfect As That ‘90s Show Guest Stars

That ’90s Show has the chance to follow its prequel series, That ’70s Show, by bringing in popular celebrities from the decade as guest stars. That ’70s Show featured notable guest stars, including many famous icons of the ’70s, such as Alice Cooper and Billy Dee Williams. If they were to take a similar approach, That ’90s Show has an adequate lineup of 90s celebrities to choose from.

The 90s had a major impact on pop culture, with some of the most notable takeaways being grunge music, reality shows, and television series such as Friends and Beverly Hills, 90210. The latter had one of its actors appearing in a cameo role in That ’90s Show among the other 90s references to be found within the series’ styling and soundtrack. These celebrities are part of significant moments of the 90s decade and would fit perfectly within the series.

As a way to honor the decade, That ’70s Show featured a stellar list of guests who were famous for their work in the 1970s, either in TV or music.

10 Shaquille O’Neal

Played in the NBA for 19 years

As one of the most recognizable and greatest players in basketball, Shaquille O’Neal is an icon of the 90s. His impressive career saw him play with a variety of teams, most notably the Los Angeles Lakers and Orlando Magic. While That ’90s Show doesn’t delve too far into it, Leia Forman is a basketball player, and it would be fun to see Shaquille take on the role of her coach. In addition, Shaquille is also no stranger to acting. He’s appeared in a wide range of projects, such as Grown Ups 2 and The Simpsons.

9 Ben Savage

Cory Matthews in Boy Meets World

Boy Meets World is among the quintessential series to come from the 90s, following the lives of Cory Matthews (Ben Savage) and his friends. Savage even reprised his role in the spin-off series of a similar concept, Girl Meets World. Considering That ’90s Show focuses on the lives of teenagers, a guest appearance from Savage could come in the form of a mentor. Boy Meets World often saw its characters receive life lessons, mainly from their teacher, George Feeny. It would be another guaranteed full-circle moment for Boy Meets World fans to see Savage delivering encouraging advice to the youth.

8 Kathleen Hanna

Lead vocalist of Bikini Kill

Although its origins aren’t from the 90s, a prominent music genre to reach mainstream status was punk rock. Acclaimed bands from the decade include Nirvana and Pearl Jam, and a noteworthy movement created from the genre was that of the Riot Grrrl. A popular band within the movement is Bikini Kill, featuring lead vocalist Kathleen Hanna. A guest star appearance from Hanna, acting as herself, would fit perfectly with the That ’90s Show character Gwen Runck and her interest in punk rock. Working as a team with Gwen, Hanna can also help bring out more confidence and rebellion from Leia.

7 Jennie Garth

Kelly Taylor in Beverly Hills, 90210

Jennie Garth’s most notable role is as Kelly Taylor in Beverly Hills, 90210. However, Garth wouldn’t be the first from the series to appear on That ’90s Show, as her co-star Brian Austin Green made a cameo in season 1. The series itself is a favorite of That ’90s Show‘s Leia and Ozzie, so more guest appearances shouldn’t be ruled out entirely. Garth’s role could be similar to Green’s in that she plays the younger version of herself as a 51-year-old, or she can appear as a new character, with her name in the credits acting as the reference.

6 Alfonso Ribeiro

Carlton Banks in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

A fan-favorite character from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is Carlton Banks, played by Alfonso Ribeiro. The character is synonymous with a dance, appropriately titled “The Carlton,” often performed throughout the series by Ribeiro. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is a beloved series from the 90s, and it would only make sense for Ribeiro to appear in That ’90s Show. In more recent years, Ribeiro has taken on the role of hosting multiple shows, including America’s Funniest Home Videos. Therefore, his cameo could be on a television screen the series’ teenagers are tuned into, mirroring his real-life endeavors.

5 Nancy Kerrigan

American figure skater

In 1994, an unforgettable assault took place during the United States Figure Skating Championships. Figure skater, Nancy Kerrigan, was struck on her lower thigh, causing a painful injury. The attack has been referenced numerous times, including a film made about the incident, I, Tonya. Kerrigan was able to recover and continue skating afterward, but she’s laid low in recent years, so a cameo from her in That ’90s Show would be a nice surprise for audiences familiar with her story. Throughout her career, she’s appeared in a few scripted projects, including Blades of Glory and Boy Meets World.

4 Sarah Michelle Gellar

Buffy Summers in Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers in Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Sarah Michelle Gellar is an icon of the 90s, most notably for her role as Buffy Summers in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. During a scene in That ’90s Show, a VHS tape of the film, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is seen in the background. Though not entirely related to one another, both the film and series had the same writer, therefore an appearance by Gellar in season 2 of That ’90s Show would be perfect. She could appear as an entirely new character, or as herself, similar to her cameo in The Big Bang Theory‘s season 12.

3 Tami Roman

Starred in The Real World: Los Angeles

The landscape of reality television only seems to be growing as the years go by, but early seasons of The Real World are praised for its depiction of issues relevant to its young adult audience. Each season was based in a different city and season 2 followed the lives of cast members in Los Angeles. One of these cast members was Tami Roman. Since her time on The Real World, Roman has worked on a great number of films and television shows and a cameo on That ’90s Show would be the perfect switch-up from her usual reality show roles.

2 Lance Bass

Singer in NSYNC

Joey Fatone and Lance Bass running into Sophie Tompkins (Hilary Duff) and Valentina Morales (Francia Raisa)

The soundtrack of That ’90s Show consists of artists most associated with the decade, such as The Muffs and Boyz II Men, but nothing from NSYNC – yet. Lance Bass, a member of the boy band, recently made a guest appearance on How I Met Your Father, acting as himself alongside former bandmate Joey Fatone. Therefore, it’s plausible he’d be open to a cameo on That ’90s Show. In recent years, NSYNC has made appearances together and while no official reunion seems to be set in place, an appearance on the series could add to the hype around new music.

1 Jennifer Aniston

Rachel Green in Friends

Jennifer Aniston’s casting in Friends played a big role in the 90s and the actress’s career. The character of Rachel Green was a fan favorite, leading to many fans achieving a similar haircut to Rachel’s in season 2. That ’90s Show has already referred to Friends when Leia and Jay are discussing their dynamic and comparing it to that of the series’ characters. In addition, Aniston hasn’t acted as her celebrity personality in projects, aside from The Larry Sanders Show, so it would be interesting to see what type of guest role she would choose to take on.

That ’70s Show returns set two decades later with That ’90s Show, acting as a sequel but bringing back old cast favorites. Led by Red (Kurtwood Smith) and Kitty (Debra Jo Rupp) Forman, the new cast arrives as the next generation, with the daughter of Eric and Donna, Leia Forman, leading the charge. Spending the summer with her grandparents, Leia makes new friends and forges new bonds in Point Place, Wisconsin. That ’70s Show series regulars make cameos in the show to maintain that sense of familiarity, and the show adopts the conventions of the ’90s as expected. That ’90s Show first aired on Netflix with a total of ten episodes.
