10 Must-See Power Rangers Seasons Every Mighty Morphin Fan Should Watch

10 Must-See Power Rangers Seasons Every Mighty Morphin Fan Should Watch

There are a few Power Rangers seasons every fan of the original series should watch, either because of how they connect to Mighty Morphin or just because of their quality. While the Power Rangers chronology includes 30 seasons of television and many other releases, Mighty Morphin will always be a separate chapter in the history of the franchise. The original Power Rangers was a pop culture phenomenon, and not everyone who watched it continued to follow every single season that came after it.

Whereas some seasons are direct sequels to their predecessors and tie directly into Mighty Morphin, others are standalone stories with little or no connections to the 1993 show. Regardless, all Power Rangers shows share some degree of continuity. Catching up with Power Rangers can be difficult, but some seasons are perfect for those primarily familiar with Mighty Morphin.

10 Power Rangers Zeo (1996)

Mighty Morphin but stronger than before

Power Rangers Zeo was bound to be compared to Mighty Morphin on every level, especially because most of the current cast returned for the new series. Zeo is a direct sequel to Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, with the crew now having to use a new source of power following the destruction of their coins. Tommy becomes the Red Ranger, Billy takes on a backstage role, and some old allies return. Despite the new Power Rangers colors, Zeo is essentially Mighty Morphin season 4, meaning it should not be skipped by fans of the original Power Rangers.

9 Power Rangers Turbo (1997)

A flawed but necessary Power Rangers season

10 Must-See Power Rangers Seasons Every Mighty Morphin Fan Should Watch

Turbo is often listed as one of the worst Power Rangers seasons, and for good reason. That said, there are some good things about it, especially after the new generation of Rangers is introduced. Although In Space is the end of the Zordon Era, it is during Turbo that the remaining OG Power Rangers bid farewell to the show and are replaced with new characters. Turbo offers some closure to the Mighty Morphin generation while introducing new Rangers that would become even more important during In Space, making it a must-see Power Rangers season.

8 Power Rangers In Space (1998)

The end of the Zordon Era

In terms of lore and chronology, In Space is one of the most important entries on the show. It marks the end of the Zordon Era, with the In Space Rangers having to fight the Alliance of Evil consisting of all previous villains. Zordon’s fate in In Space would change the saga forever, and the show’s success is one of the reasons why Power Rangers remained strong despite Turbo’s poor reception. Even without considering its importance to the saga’s timeline, Power Rangers in Space is an incredible season that still holds up.

7 Power Rangers Lost Galaxy (1999)

A new beginning for Power Rangers

The Lost Galaxy Power Rangers waking through a destroyed Terra Venture

From Mighty Morphin to In Space, someone binging Power Rangers will notice that it is all part of just one story, with Zordon serving as the connective thread. However, all other seasons would act as standalone stories. This change happens in Power Rangers Lost Galaxy, whose main characters are not tied to Angel Grove or Zordon in any way. Lost Galaxy also happens to be one of the best, most well-received Power Rangers seasons, combining the franchise’s identity with a Star Trek-is aesthetic that made for an incredible sci-fi journey. Lost Galaxy was Power Rangers’ most mature season upon its release.

6 Power Rangers Time Force (2001)

One of the best Power Rangers shows

Time Force is not tied to the characters or storylines from Mighty Morphin, yet it should be required viewing for everyone who enjoys Power Rangers. Another sci-fi Power Rangers season, Time Force is a great example of how many great stories can be told within that universe. Every entry in the franchise has a gimmick, but Time Force’s premise of a team of “time cops” who got stuck in the past and must save the future while avoiding paradoxes is incredibly engaging. The characters are all well-developed, the villain is truly menacing, and the Quantum Ranger is a scene-stealer.

5 Power Rangers Dino Thunder (2004)

A Mighty Morphin legacy season

Power Rangers Dino Thunder's Black Ranger

Although the Disney era of Power Rangers continued to focus on standalone seasons, Dino Thunder was, in many ways, a legacy sequel to Mighty Morphin. For the first time since Turbo, the Rangers were once again high school kids who happened to become superheroes. Secondly, Jason David Frank reprised his role as Tommy Oliver as a series regular, which had not happened since the first portion of Turbo. Full of callbacks to Tommy’s Power Rangers history and with strong storytelling, Dino Thunder is a fan-favorite season and a highlight of the franchise’s early 2000s entries.

4 Power Rangers Samurai (2011)

A return to the formula for Power Rangers

Power Rangers Samurai does not rank high in the list of best Power Rangers seasons. It also contains some aspects that have not aged well, including part of the show’s premise. However, after multiple standalone seasons with relatively complicated premises and settings, Samurai marked a return to the formula for Power Rangers. It was the first non-Disney Power Rangers season in years, meaning everything was now different compared to previous entries. Samurai tried to be the Mighty Morphin of a new generation, and it works as a good starting point for new audiences.

3 Power Rangers Dino Fury (2021-2022)

Power Rangers nostalgia done right

A very recent addition to Power Rangers, Dino Fury has been setting the tone of the franchise for the past couple of years. With one of the best sets of Rangers in all of the show’s canon, Dino Fury features compelling and engaging characters in a season full of callbacks to Mighty Morphin. The biggest of them is the return of Lord Zedd, the iconic foe introduced in Mighty Morphin season 2. Dino Fury feels like classic Power Rangers, with fun and entertaining episodes that also nail humor and character development.

2 Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always (2023)

A Netflix special centered on the original Power Rangers

Zack's morphing sequence in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Once & Always

Although Once & Always is not a season, it is a Power Rangers TV special that every Mighty Morphin fan should watch. Set 30 years after the end of the original show, Once & Always brought back OG Rangers Billy Cranston and Zack Taylor, both of whom had never appeared since the 1990s. The special, which served as a tribute to Trini Kwan’s actress Thuy Trang, also featured second-generation Mighty Morphin Rangers like Rocky, Kat, Adam, and Aisha. Once & Always is an emotional reunion that offers a lot of nostalgia.

1 Power Rangers Cosmic Fury (2023)

The final chapter in Mighty Morphin’s history

Cosmic Fury may be the sequel to Dino Fury, but it is also a continuation of stories that began in 1993. Not only is Lord Zedd Cosmic Fury’s main villain, but the season also stars David Yost as Billy Cranston. The original Blue Ranger acts as a mentor to the new heroes and also suits up for battle, perfectly bringing the show full circle 30 years later. Zedd and Billy are not the only Mighty Morphin characters who show up in Cosmic Fury, though, as there are plenty of more surprises in this 10-episode Power Rangers series.
