Now that the Oscars have passed and we’ve survived the doldrums of the past two months, it’s time to get excited about movies again. Although we still have a few months before 2012’s biggest films hit theaters – I’m talking to you, The Dark Knight Rises – March offers a few films that we at Screen Rant are especially excited about.
With that in mind, we’ve compiled a list of “10 Movies We’re Looking Forward to in March 2012.” Some are slated to be big blockbusters while others will likely just attract a niche audience. But, all together, they will all make for an interesting month at the cineplex.
Opening in theaters this week is the highly-anticipated John Carter. Starring Taylor Kitsch, Willem Dafoe and Mark Strong, this is a special effects-laden film that cost its studio a lot to produce. The film is based on the novel “A Princess of Mars,” written by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Although response to the film’s trailers has been tracking below expectations, there’s already talk of a potential sequel.
Will this original outperform low expectations and make a sequel inevitable or will it crash and burn at the box office? Take a look at the latest trailer and decide for yourself if you’re willing to shell out $15 to see this 3D adventure.
Last year, Elizabeth Olsen surprised audiences and critics alike with her performance in Martha Marcy May Marlene as a woman trying to escape from a cult. In Silent House, she’s trying to escape from another horrific situation as she is chased throughout a house by a nasty sociopath. Set in real-time, this horror film has a premise that could easily set it apart from other films in the genre.
Although horror films are often terribly disappointing, this one has potential. With a unique format and an interesting young star headlining, Silent House could be worth checking out this weekend. Decide for yourself by watching the trailer.
Jennifer Westfeldt took on three roles in the production of the new film, Friends with Kids. She wrote, directed and stars in this comedy about three couples having children. Two of the couples are married while the third – played by Westfeldt and Adam Scott – decide to raise a child together, despite their platonic relationship.
The film also reunites four members of the Bridesmaids cast: Kirsten Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Jon Hamm and Chris O’Dowd; however, the trailer shows that this movie, despite a similar roster of actresses and actors, is far less crude than the previous film. Will this small movie be a big success? We’ll find out when the movie opens this week.
Based on the late 1980’s television drama of the same name, 21 Jump Street promises a few laughs and an interesting partnership between comic actor Jonah Hill and the straight-laced Channing Tatum. The screenplay was written by Hill and Michael Ball, who previously brought us Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.
Let’s face it. Film adaptations of old television shows usually don’t work but with these two young leading men, and a few laughs, Jump Street could be a lot of fun. Check out the trailer and see for yourself.
Brothers Jay and Mark Duplass previously brought audiences the 2010 drama Cyrus, which starred Jonah Hill. Now, the duo have teamed up once again with Jeff, who Lives at Home. Starring Jason Segel, Ed Helms, and Susan Sarandon, this film could turn out to be a little movie that attracts a niche audience in the same way that Cyrus did.
Segel has made a few interesting choices in his career. He was great in The Muppets but Bad Teacher fell short. Check out the trailer for his new film to see if this could be a big hit for the young comedian or another lackluster offering.
The Hunger Games, one of the most anticipated movies of this year hits theaters towards the end of March. Yet, expectations are already sky-high. Based on the popular novel by Suzanne Collins, the film stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, as well as Liam Hemsworth and promises to be one of the biggest movies of the year.
If you haven’t read the book, the film adaptation might not appeal to you but, for others, this adaptation is what people have been waiting for. Eager fans should watch the trailer – and try not to get too excited about the Games beginning.
The Raid: Redemption boasts no major stars. But it promises lots of action and great fighting sequences. Written and directed by Gareth Evans, this low-budget foreign film could be the bolt of nonstop action that viewers have been looking for.
With low expectations and solid reviews so far, The Raid: Redemption could do surprisingly well at the box office. Check out the trailer to see if this movie is for you.
Although 2010’s Clash of the Titans was greeted by middling reviews – including ours – its sequel will hit theaters in a matter of weeks. Like its predecessor, Wrath of the Titans stars Sam Worthington, Ralph Fiennes and Liam Neeson. And like John Carter, its looks like there is already a potential sequel in the works if this installment does well.
For fans of the 2010 remake, Wrath could definitely be worth seeing. For non-fans, the jury is still out at this point. Watch the trailer and decide for yourself if this sequel deserves your support.
Julia Roberts’ last film was Larry Crowne, where she shared the limelight with Tom Hanks. But the marketing for Mirror, Mirror has mostly put her in the center spotlight – as the iconic evil Queen. With a big star like Roberts and a well-known tale serving as the main story, this movie could be either a huge hit or a massive disaster. There has already been some controversy about the Mirror, Mirror marketing campaign – so it’ll be interesting to see how the final film actually plays-out.
Although this isn’t the only take on the Snow White tale scheduled for release this year, it’s the first one out the gate – as a result, coupled with some big name talent, there’s a lot of interest in the project. Check out the trailer to see if Mirror, Mirror looks like something that you’ll be willing to shell out money for at the end of March.
With a screenplay written by Jay Baruchel (Tropic Thunder) and Evan Goldberg (Superbad), Goon could definitely attract a young audience – especially those interested in hockey and the role of goons in the on-ice proceedings. The film offers a predominantly young cast including Seann William Scott in the lead role – with Baruchel playing his best friend.
It’s coming out in a limited number of theaters – so it will be interesting to see how Goon does. If you’re interested in seeing how the film depicts the game, make sure to have a look at the latest Goon trailer.
March is set to offer a little something for everyone this year.
