The Addams Family is an iconic movie that audiences have loved since its 1991 release. With a real cast of characters and a spooky setting that is still suitable for the entire family, there’s a lot to like about the original live-action Addams movie. It’s family-friendly and very funny at points, all while having a great moral lesson about not judging people, no matter what they look like on the outside. It is also spawned an excellent sequel.
While there have been many retellings of this tale in slightly different ways, from the 1960s TV series to the 2019 animated movie (and more), there are also plenty of other non-Addams movies that people who like the creepy, kooky, mysterious, and spooky family will enjoy.
The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
The Nightmare Before Christmas is an amazing stop-motion movie that does a great job of having an eerie vibe at times, while also being a lot of fun to watch. It’s a movie that isn’t too scary for young audiences, but it does bring some spooky moments to younger viewers in a fun manner.
Jack Skellington is a character that is easy to connect with and the film does have a similar feel to The Addams Family in the sense that he wants to be different and not only be judged only on his ability to scare. Jack is a layered character who has a wide range of emotions and wants to be nice as well, which people may not think just by looking at him.
Little Shop Of Horrors (1986)
This musical movie is a ton of fun to watch which has lots of very fun characters and some fantastic songs throughout. The movie focuses on a florist who is desperate to try and save his business and decides to purchase a plant from a vendor.
However, things obviously do not go to plan and that’s how the fun of this movie really does begin. It’s unpredictable and wild at times with a lot of very fun characters who have huge personalities, which is very similar to The Addams Family.
Young Frankenstein (1974)
Another movie that does a great job of blending comedy and horror together is Young Frankenstein. The Mel Brooks film follows Frankenstein as he gets the chance to inherit his grandfather’s classic castle and try to start working on his old experiments is a really fun one.
It has great horror elements from the fact that Frankenstein is involved, who is a classic monster. Yet at the same time, there is a lot of comedy throughout the movie, and it’s that element which really helps to make it similar to The Addams Family, with dark humor being a good link between them.
Hocus Pocus (1993)
Hocus Pocus has become something of a cult classic over the years, becoming incredibly popular for the brilliant characters and the tremendous story. Of course, as the title suggests, this movie has dark tones as it is set around three witches who come back to life to get revenge.
Each witch has her own very unique personality and that is what makes them such funny characters to watch. The chemistry between them is why the movie has been so popular and with such great moments of comedy, it is no surprise fans of The Addams Family would enjoy this one.
Hotel Transylvania (2012)
Those who watched the 2019 animated version of The Addams Family are sure to love this one, but people who like the original can find joy in it as well. Bringing together a classic group of monsters who are all notorious for being terrifying and turning that on its head by showing them in a fun manner is a big reason this movie is so great.
With Dracula doing everything in his power to stop his daughter from dating a human, it showcases how a connection between humans and monsters is possible in the movie world. The movie has lots of funny moments for younger audiences and several hidden adult jokes as well, which makes it a joy for everyone.
Monster Family (2017)
Another movie that features a lot of classic monster characters is Monster Family, which is a very fun animated adventure. A woman is turned into a vampire and her family all become various different monsters as well due to Dracula’s spell going wrong.
From there, the comedic moments are really able to seep out and that’s where this movie comes into its own. While it might not have the old-school feel of The Addams Family, it certainly has a lot of similarities.
Men In Black (1997)
Barry Sonnenfeld did a fantastic job directing the original Addams Family movie, and the blend of unique characters and worlds with dark humor is something he has continued to do throughout his career. His greatest other example of that is Men In Black.
While this is a sci-fi movie and The Addams Family leans more towards horror, the two are very similar in tone. Characters with big personalities combine with a vibrant and clearly defined world featuring some insane ideas are sewn together with a strong story is what Barry does well with both films.
Hellboy (2004)
While Hellboy is far more action-packed, with this movie featuring a lot of great fight scenes, it is still a film that fans of The Addams Family might like. There is just something that is very similar in terms of tone and that is what makes it a great movie.
While it is very heavy on the action, there is also a lot of comedy spliced in as well which makes the movie very enjoyable to watch. Plus, Hellboy himself is another example of a character most people would expect to be a villain, yet in actual fact, he’s the total opposite.
Edward Scissorhands (1990)
Edward Scissorhands is a movie that everyone is well aware of and it’s one that anybody who likes The Addams Family would find enjoyment with. The big reason for that is the fact it is a character looking to break out from being judged, especially once he is blamed for a crime.
Edward is a very emotional character and someone who has a lot of personality and that really carries this movie. Of course, due to his hands, he is a little different from a conventional character, which is something that The Addams Family could relate with.
Beetlejuice (1988)
When it comes to classic movies which have a certain, spooky feel to them but are still able to be incredibly entertaining, they don’t come much better than Beetlejuice. This movie is absolutely fantastic, with a strong story as a young couple has to try and scare away the new owners.
Of course, the movie is all about Beetlejuice himself though. Much like the characters in The Addams Family, he has become very iconic, with audiences loving him for the sheer charisma that he brings to the screen, blending family horror with great comedy.
