10 Movies That Are Rated Too High On IMDb, According To Reddit

10 Movies That Are Rated Too High On IMDb, According To Reddit

Everything Everywhere All At Once has taken the world, the universe, and every other universe by storm, and it has already become the #111 best movie on IMDb. The film has an 8.4 on the movie database, making it the only 2022 movie to cross the 8.0 benchmark so far. However, some might think that the multiversal sci-fi-comedy isn’t deserving of its rating.

Redditors have jumped at the chance to debate which movies don’t deserve their high IMDb scores, and even though they’re hot takes, the users make some strong arguments. Between a tear-jerking musical biopic, a spectacular prison drama, and several Christopher Nolan-directed movies, Redditors think these high scores are unjust.

Gravity (2013) – 7.7

Gravity had a huge impact when it was first released in 2013, and it’s one of the few non-franchise movies that simply had to be watched on the biggest screen due to its chilling space sequences. The movie follows an astronaut who gets lost in space after a catastrophic and fatal event on a space station, and the dizzying effects are absolutely spectacular.

But this deleted user wasn’t as awe-inspired by the movie as everyone else. The Redditor admits that the visuals are great, but they take issue with the science, arguing, “When a movie pretty much promotes itself under the banner of ‘built upon hard science/based in reality,’ any discrepancies take me right out of the movie.”

X-Men: First Class (2011) – 7.7

X-Men: First Class marked a return to form for the X-Men series, as it followed the critically scathed X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. However, Pixelated_Justice disagrees, stating “I love X-Men, but to me, this one was terrible,” but they’re completely in the minority.

The 2011 movie is a superhero flick elevated by its periodic setting, as it has wonderful-looking ’60s facades. But the movie’s main focus is Charles and Erik’s relationship and their conflicting ideologies. The way that the hero and villain want to achieve the same goals but have vastly different ways of reaching them makes for one of the most well-written superhero movies ever, and one of the best prequels of all time.

Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) – 7.9

Between the classic music, the vivid color palette, and the sentimentality of the movie, it’s easy to get caught up in Bohemian Rhapsody‘s magic. It particularly features an incredible Academy Award-winning performance from Rami Malek.

But Minhhuy525 wasn’t as amazed by the thrills and spectacle of the 2018 release as most others were. The Redditor explains, “It’s a by-the-number rock biopic for one of the most extraordinary bands ever. It’s not even historically accurate.” The user isn’t wrong, as between Freddie Mercury leaving the band to go solo and even the years the band recorded music, Bohemian Rhapsody is full of historical inaccuracies.

The Avengers (2012) – 8.0

When The Avengers was first released ten years ago, it was the biggest movie event in years and was unprecedented in the way that it crossed over four different movie series. And seeing the heroes working together was a spectacle unlike any other. It saw every superhero’s best moment, whether it was Captain America jumping behind his shield or Black Widow riding on a Chitauri Chariot.

However, Dirtey claims that the movie doesn’t deserve its 8.0 rating and that viewers are starting to realize. The Redditor observes, “The rating history on it really says it as well, it is slowly dropping out of the top 250.” And since the Redditor posted the comment, The Avengers has dropped out of IMDb’s top 250 movies. This dip in the IMDb ranking is likely because the Avengers movies have gotten better and better, forcing fans to reassess the original.

Dog Day Afternoon (1975) – 8.0

While heist movies generally tend to be exciting and often glamorize the process, Dog Day Afternoon is the exact opposite. The 1975 movie is a cautionary tale and warns its audiences that heists aren’t meticulous, fun, or cool, but they’re instead realistically committed by desperate people, and that the act comes with fatal consequences.

But RidingShotgun doesn’t think the film deserves the movie’s 8.0. While they admit that they do like the movie, “There is a lot of padding and the slowness of the halfway point really made me feel they should have added more interesting/exciting things during that point.” The user also complains about the acting. But many the acting has been one of the most praised elements of the movie, so the Redditor is very much in the minority.

My Neighbor Totoro (1988) – 8.1

Studio Ghibli has an amazing track record when it comes to animated movies, and not even Pixar can compete with Ghibli’s wholesome approach to storytelling. My Neighbor Totoro is a perfect example of the studio’s wholesomeness, as it follows two young sisters who go on a fanatastical journey, which distracts them from their mother being in the hospital.

However, while ElderCunningham, in fact, liked the film, they still don’t think it’s worthy of an 8.1. The 1988 release is number 172 on IMDb’s top 250 list, but the Redditor argues, “While a very enjoyable film, it doesn’t really feel like it deserves a spot.”

Wall-E (2008) – 8.4

WALL-E and EVE share a kiss

Wall-E is one of the 21st century’s greatest animated movies, and the first 20 minutes alone pushes the boundaries of animation. These moments feature no dialogue whatsoever, which is a huge risk for a kids’ movie that needs to keep young people’s attention. While many agree that this artistic decision absolutely paid off, a deleted user thinks otherwise.

Referring to the animated movie’s place on IMDb’s top 250 list, the Redditor rhetorically asks, “Out of all the brilliant films made by Disney, Pixar, Dreamworks, and Aardman, WALL-E makes the cut? What the hell?” However, Wall-E is the only Pixar movie on the list, whereas Aardman’s stop-motion animation and movie premise are too niche for a general audience.

Inception (2010) – 8.8

Leonardo DiCaprio watches a top spin from Inception

Inception became an instant classic when it was released in 2010, as it was the most original sci-fi action movie since 1999’s The Matrix, and it had an ending that audiences couldn’t stop talking about. It features one of the most memorable final shots in a 2010s movie that is still being heavily debated today.

14thCluelessbird isn’t as enchanted by the movie as others, as they post, “Maybe deserves a 7.5/10. It’s overrated. It’s rated higher than T2 and Gladiator. C’mon, it’s nowhere near that good.” The final act of the movie is remembered much better than the meat of the film, but it’s still full of effects that even Stanley Kubrick would have been astounded by.

The Dark Knight (2008) – 9.0

The Dark Knight is the crown jewel in the best superhero trilogy ever, and not only is it one of the very few movies that has a nine rating on IMDb, but it is the third-highest-rated movie ever on the movie database. But Fivo222 contends, “It is a good movie, but 3rd in the top 250… give me a break. It’s a standard superhero story.”

It’s no secret that the movie’s success and praise mostly come from Heath Ledger’s Oscar-winning performance as the Joker. And while the movie has an epic narrative and becomes more frantic with each scene, if it wasn’t for the Joker, The Dark Knight might not be quite as well regarded as it is today.

The Shawshank Redemption (1994) – 9.3

The Shawshank Redemption is the highest-rated movie ever on IMDb. With a 9.3, it’s more beloved than either Godfather movies or any Christopher Nolan-directed spectacle. But Experienta thinks it’s undeserving of a score so high. The Redditor argues, “It’s a good movie, but the best movie of all time? No, not even close.”

The 1994 movie is a people-pleaser, and there’s something in it for everyone. Even though the Godfather films are considered some of the best of all time, some people just don’t like gangster movies. Shawshank, on the other hand, is something everyone can enjoy. And that could be what led to it earning IMDb’s top spot.
