While Back to the Future’s Doctor Emmett Brown (Christopher Lloyd) may not seem that powerful at a glance, it’s important to note that not only did the scientist develop the power of time travel, in a car, no less, but his imparting wisdom to Marty (Michael J. Fox) helped save the world on more than one occasion. Doc’s inner strength also makes him powerful; his determination allows him to create ground-breaking inventions, and the incredible catalog of scientific knowledge crammed into his brain is often helpful in life-or-death situations. Plus, his thirst to keep learning more could make him unstoppable, in the right situation.

There are many characters in the Star Trek movies that can be considered powerful, but Spock stands out from the bunch. Spock’s strength comes from both a physiological and mental angle. As part Vulcan, Spock’s resistance to pain is significantly better than the average human, as well as being physically stronger than others. His extreme intelligence and analytical mind have also got him out of sticky situations, using logical thought under pressure without barely breaking a sweat. He also has telepathic abilities, which have often been useful aboard the USS Enterprise, although his greatest weapon is the Vulcan nerve grip.

Director

Release Date

July 17, 1987

Writers

Robocop‘s titular character, previously known as Alex Murphy (Peter Weller), has an interesting combination of human and cybernetic components, making him a threatening figure. His titanium armor and extreme strength have experienced some harrowing encounters, but unlike most other robotic characters in sci-fi, Robocop has the ability to repair himself. The human part that remains allows Robocop to maintain his morality, which enables him to defy his programmed orders.

This is seen in the 1987 film when he is unable to go through with killing Boddicker (Kurtwood Smith) as it goes against his directives, but later, stabs him in the throat to protect himself and an injured Anne Lewis (Nancy Allen). Of course, Robocop is always armed, too, with a built-in firearm and an array of dangerous gadgets, ready to use against any threat he faces. Despite all of his mechanical altercations, the Alex Murphy part of Robocop is always present to some degree, which gives him an edge compared to a standard robot.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s T-800 in Terminator is one of the most iconic cyborgs in cinematic history, especially because of its near-perfect human appearance. This disguise is one of the reasons why the T-800 is so powerful, as it allows Schwarzenegger’s character to blend into its surroundings while still hunting its target. On top of its super strength, the T-800 is also loaded with weapons, two ideal qualities for an assassin. However, while the T-800 is relatively bulletproof, it’s not completely indestructible, as seen in Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

While the T-800 is powerful in its own right, the rivaling T-1000 (Robert Patrick) from Terminator 2: Judgment Day is more so. The advanced prototype has the ability to shapeshift due to its liquid metal coating, making the self-aware AI difficult to locate as it replicates any person or objects it crosses, meaning nobody is ever safe from its lurking. With this capability, the T-1000 can also turn its body into weaponry, such as converting its arms into vicious stabbing blades. Compared to the T-800, the T-1000 is significantly more robust but still has its weak point: liquid nitrogen.

The Matrix movies’ main antagonist, Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving), caused quite a lot of chaos across several of its films. His continuous persistence in tracking down Neo (Keanu Reeves) is a danger in itself, and despite being knocked back, Smith always bounces back each time, stronger than ever. As an agent, Smith has superhuman abilities, making him great in hand-to-hand combat, and in The Matrix Unloaded, gains the power to multiply himself at will. Unlike other agents in the franchise, Smith’s duties and morals are more blurred, and his attitude toward humanity being a “virus” is nothing but chilling.

Neo

The Matrix

Neo, also known as “The One,” is powerful for many reasons, but primarily because of his ability to meld the Matrix to his will due to the Prime Program. Doing so then allowed him to play with the Matrix itself, and Neo was able to access an array of superpowers, including telekinesis, superhuman strength and agility, and even various martial arts skills. Neo is also able to see the truth of the Matrix and its simulated reality, which makes him a danger to the Agents. However, the downside to this is that Neo can only access these talents within the Matrix itself and not in the real world.

Akira‘s Tetsuo Shima is remembered for the psychic abilities he gained after a motorcycle accident, which resulted in the downfall of the futuristic Neo-Tokyo. However, Tetsuo’s inability to control his powers, combined with his frustrations, often got the better of him. This led to extreme chaos and damage, as was seen when he attempted an escape from the hospital and ended up killing several military personnel in the process.

As the film progresses, Tetsuo’s abilities grow, and he warps into a monstrous form, even gaining a robotic arm at one point. His struggle to control his powers, paired with his emotional troubles and desire for dominance, ultimately causes his downfall, turning his friends against him. However, his most impressive power came at the end of Akira, triggering the creation of a new universe and transcending humanity and its form altogether.

While there are plenty of powerful sci-fi movie characters, Optimus Prime from the Transformers franchise dominates all others. As a Cybertronian, Optimus Prime has incredible durability and can withstand intense amounts of firepower. He is also very skilled in combat, armed with various iconic weapons, including the Energon axe in the Generation 1 animated series and the ion blaster from both the Transformers movies and TV shows. Plus, with his ability to transform, Optimus Prime is an ideal candidate for a heavy-duty fight.

Of course, it’s not just physical aspects that make Optimus Prime so powerful. Prime’s strong morals and loyalties to the Autobots are two of the reasons why he’s able to protect his team from the Decepticons, ensuring he’s always prepared for their conflicts. The leader of the Autobots has sacrificed himself multiple times throughout the franchise, proving that his determination for peace and protecting the innocent transcends everything else, which would make any Transformers antagonist with an ounce of common sense nervous, let alone within the sci-fi genre as a whole.
