10 Most Powerful Gen 9 Pokémon In Scarlet & Violet (According To Lore)

10 Most Powerful Gen 9 Pokémon In Scarlet & Violet (According To Lore)

There are several powerful Gen 9 creatures in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet that can even be considered threats to life itself if taking into consideration the lore. While playing, the most important attribute tends to be a Pokémon’s stats and its moves, but the games also reveal interesting details about how these creatures are perceived within the franchise. Pokédex entries often give practical examples of how powerful certain pocket monsters are outside of battles and how their actions can have real implications on the world of Pokémon.

Lore bits are scattered across the games. Many Pokédex entries reveal interesting details, such as Pokémon that were once human or that some of these creatures are edible for humans. Entries also reveal the order of some predatory chains and ancient rivalries – Zangoose and Seviper are known to be enemies, for instance. With Gen 9’s Pokémon Scarlet and Violet games, many new creatures were introduced, revealing some that are vessels for immense power, capable of wiping out entire portions of the land.

10 Baxcalibur

Type: Dragon- and Ice-type

Baxcalibur appearing in battle in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

Gen 9’s pseudo-Legendary Baxcalibur lives up to its reputation and stands as one of the strongest Pokémon. Aside from having an impressive base stat distribution, Baxcalibur is also known for its prowess in the wild. As is revealed in the creature’s entry in both Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet, Baxcalibur has a potent cryogenic breath.

It is so powerful that Pokémon Scarlet’s entry mentions that Baxcalibur’s breath can instantly freeze lava. Considering the temperatures lava usually reaches, being able to not only cool it down but essentially freeze it to a cold state in a matter of seconds is an impressive feat. It is no wonder that Baxcalibur is one of the strongest Pokémon in Gen 9, both in the lore and in gameplay.

9 Chien-Pao

Type: Dark- and Ice-type

The Legendary Chien-Pao, one of the four members of the Treasures of Ruin, is also very powerful, according to the mentions of it in the lore. While the most eye-grabbing detail about Chien-Pao is the fact that it is born from the hatred of those who died by the sword that composes its fangs, according to the Pokémon Violet entry, there is more to it.

Chien-Pao’s entry in Pokémon Scarlet reveals that this creature can control 100 tons of fallen snow. In essence, the Legendary Pokémon can control avalanches. The mention of Chien-Pao playing in the snow that it drops down seems to hint at how effortlessly it can create these avalanches.

8 Okidogi

Type: Poison- and Fighting-type

The muscle of the Loyal Three Legendary group from the land of Kitakami has rightfully earned its reputation. This brute canine and ally to the Mythical Pecharunt is indeed very powerful, according to the lore provided by the Teal Mask DLC for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

As seen in Okidogi’s Pokédex entry in Pokémon Scarlet, it gained its physical prowess from the toxic chain around its neck, granted by Pecharunt. Pokémon Violet, however, reveals that Okidogi’s power is sufficient to pulverize anything simply by swinging the toxic chain on its neck. The power to destroy anything in its radius with a single swing is one to be reckoned with.

7 Ting-Lu

Type: Dark- and Ground-type

Another member of the Treasures of Ruin, the Legendary Ting-Lu is a force of nature. This bull-like Dark- and Ground-type Pokémon from the Gen 9 games has a bulky build, which reflects the very powers it carries. According to its entry in Pokémon Scarlet, Ting-Lu was born from the fear poured into an ancient ritual vessel that clung to the earth.

Pokémon Violet’s entry on Ting-Lu, however, reveals more about its powers. According to the game, the Legendary Pokémon can simply insert its head into the ground and create fissures in the earth that run 160 feet deep. Like Chien-Pao, it seems like Ting-Lu goes through no effort to cause a large amount of destruction.

6 Terapagos

Type: Normal-type

The mascot for the Indigo Disk DLC for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Terapagos, is one of the strongest creatures in Gen 9. Its appearance, especially in its Normal Form, obscures the power that it holds within. Terapagos is the one responsible for the entire Terastal Phenomenon that occurs in Paldea and the only survivor of its species after millions of years.

The various Pokédex entries on Terapagos, depending on their state, do not reveal too much other than its control over the Terastal Phenomenon. Nevertheless, this is the strongest power in the Gen 9 games, so being the source of it and having two additional forms centered around the phenomenon grant Terapagos the reputation of one of the most powerful Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet.

5 Raging Bolt

Type: Electric- and Dragon-type

One of the new ancient Paradox Pokémon added with the Indigo Disk DLC, Raging Bolt is also very powerful. Other than being a fine competitive asset due to its stats and learnset, the Paradox form of Raikou is one of the few Paradox Pokémon that has an in-game description that truly showcases just how strong it is.

Raging Bolt’s entry in Pokémon Violet mentions it is considered Raikou’s ancestor, but Pokémon Scarlet says that it is capable of incinerating everything around it. The power to set fire to everything in its radius and destroy it with electric powers is absolutely terrifying. Other Paradox creatures, such as Iron Crown, are said to be strong, but the description of their abilities is not as menacing as that of Raging Bolt.

4 Chi-Yu

Type: Dark- and Fire-type

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Chi Yu on a Tera Raid battle background.

Chi-Yu is the smallest and cutest member of the Treasure of Ruins, but its looks should not confound players. This Dark- and Fire-type Legendary Pokémon is one of the strongest in Gen 9. Pokémon Violet’s entry of Chi-Yu only mentions how envy accumulated within beads came in tough with fire and gave it birth.

The secret to Chi-Yu’s might lies in its Pokédex entry in Pokémon Scarlet. According to the game, Chu-Yu can control flames that go over 5,400 degrees Fahrenheit and it swims through the sea of lava it creates. For reference, the temperature of the flames is around half of how hot the sun is and over double the standard temperature at which lava burns. Considering the power of heat, it could be vaporizing everything around it.

3 Wo-Chien

Type: Dark- and Grass-type

Wo-Chien in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

Despite the terrifying power held by all members of the Treasures of Ruin Legendary group, Wo-Chien is arguably the strongest of them all. This Gen 9 Pokémon looks like a lethargic slug of sorts, but that really does not matter considering its innate ability to drain the life force out of entire forests.

This ability is referred to in Wo-Chien’s Pokédex entry in Pokémon Violet. The game mentions that it can cause forests to wither and fields to turn barren in an instant. The power to eliminate all vegetation is also the power to eliminate life itself, considering how the food chain works. Wo-Chien is a menace and easily one of the strongest Pokémon in Gen 9.

2 Koraidon

Type: Fighting- and Dragon-type

A key-art of Koraidon in the Pokemon TCG Scarlet Violet set, featuring the creature roaring amidst trees.

Koraidon is the mascot for Pokémon Scarlet and one of the most powerful beings to emerge from Gen 9. The dual Fighting- and Dragon-type Legendary has its worth proven with stats and tons of gameplay value – especially in Tera Raids – but is also known for being strong within the lore.

Its Pokédex entry in Pokémon Violet only mentions its resemblance to Cyclizar. However, Koraidon’s entry in Pokémon Scarlet refers to it as the Winged King and says that it can split the land with its bare fists. To accomplish such a feat with little effort, the Pokémon would have to be a powerhouse. It seems like Koraidon’s lore reputation was accurately translated into his gameplay mechanics, as it truly is one of the strongest Pokémon in Gen 9.

1 Miraidon

Type: Electric- and Dragon-type

The futuristic counterpart to Koraidon, Miraidon, is the mascot of Pokémon Violet. Its entry in Pokémon Scarlet only mentions a resemblance to Cyclizar, but Pokémon Violet reveals it is known as the Iron Serpent. Miraidon is said to be capable of turning the land to ash with its lightning powers, something that is well-translated into gameplay.
