10 MCU Storylines We Hope Marvel Rewrites In Deadpool & Wolverine

10 MCU Storylines We Hope Marvel Rewrites In Deadpool & Wolverine

Marvel Studios could change the shape of the MCU forever, if Phase 5’s upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine rewrites some of the franchise’s most disappointing and unusual storylines. Following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019, Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds and Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige confirmed that Wade Wilson would be making the permanent move to the MCU. Hugh Jackman was also confirmed to be returning as Wolverine in September 2022, and the first trailer for Phase 5’s Deadpool & Wolverine confirmed that the pair will find themselves enlisted by the Time Variance Authority for a dramatic MCU adventure.

Deadpool & Wolverine is expected to change the status quo of the MCU forever, introducing a slew of mutants to the franchise, while making events from Fox’s X-Men Universe canon in the MCU’s multiverse. Particular scenes from Deadpool & Wolverine’s trailer have contributed to a theory that Deadpool will be time traveling throughout the MCU’s history in the upcoming Phase 5 movie, which means that Marvel Studios may rewrite certain events that perhaps didn’t go down well with audiences, or to rectify some major plot holes. Luckily, there are several disappointing and underwhelming storylines that Deadpool & Wolverine could change.

10 Marvel Studios Could Try Inhumans Again

Marvel Television’s Inhumans Was A Massive Flop

After Inhumans were established as a key story element in Marvel Television’s Agents of SHIELD, a dedicated series based on the species was produced and released in 2017. Inhumans received an overwhelmingly negative response, which has meant that the complex species has been completely omitted from the MCU since then. However, 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness featured a cameo from Anson Mount’s Black Bolt, so Marvel Studios may be beginning to sew the seeds of new Inhumans storylines, and Deadpool & Wolverine can push this along by completely erasing the events of the disappointing Marvel Television series.

9 Steve Rogers & Sharon Carter’s Romance Was Pointless & Should Be Erased

Steve Rogers’ Romance With Sharon Carter Was Always Controversial

Steve Rogers and Sharon Carter together in Captain America Civil War

One of the weirdest storylines in the MCU’s Phases 2 and 3 was the budding romance between Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers and Emily VanCamp’s Sharon Carter. Carter is the niece of Rogers’ true MCU love-interest, Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter, which made their romance even stranger, so many would prefer for this narrative to be removed from the MCU. Deadpool & Wolverine could revisit the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier or Captain America: Civil War and stop this relationship before it begins, which could even set Sharon Carter on a path that negates Phase 4’s confusing Power Broker storyline.

8 Thor: Ragnarok Could Be More Inspired By Planet Hulk

Thor: Ragnarok Used Elements Of Marvel Comics Planet Hulk Event

Gladiator Hulk yelling in Thor Ragnarok

Back in 2017, director Taika Waititi borrowed elements from Marvel Comics’ intense Planet Hulk storyline for Thor: Ragnarok, introducing the Hulk’s exile to Sakaar. This had the potential to really set up Marvel Studios’ rumored World War Hulk project, but fumbled its delivery. In the comics, the Hulk’s involuntary exile to Sakaar culminates in him assuming control of the planet before his wife’s death prompts him to return to Earth with a vengeance. Deadpool & Wolverine’s trailer shows Deadpool on the Hulk’s jaw-like bed on Sakaar, so it’s possible Thor: Ragnarok could be altered to better fit this overarching narrative.

7 Quicksilver’s Death In Age Of Ultron Can Be Reversed

Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s MCU Quicksilver Was Killed Off Too Early

Quicksilver being shot in Avengers Age of Ultron

Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s MCU debuts as Wanda and Pietro Maximoff, respectively, were exciting back in Phase 2, but the latter was killed off in his first full appearance in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. Wanda Maximoff’s Scarlet Witch has undergone a fantastic transformation in the MCU, but Quicksilver was completely wasted. Some theories have suggested that Deadpool has been seen in the snowy forest from the opening of Age of Ultron in Deadpool & Wolverine’s trailer, suggesting that he may be rewriting Quicksilver’s death, potentially allowing him to return to the MCU – maybe even as a mutant.

6 Jane Foster Can Return As The Mighty Thor

Jane Foster’s Mighty Thor Was One Of Thor: Love & Thunder’s Best Elements

Although 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder didn’t receive a positive reception, one of the project’s most exciting new additions was Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster being revealed to be the Mighty Thor. Wielding Mjolnir in an attempt to push back her terminal cancer, Foster could have been set up for a bright future in the MCU, but fell victim to her cancer in the project, and made her way to Valhalla. Deadpool & Wolverine may rewrite the events of Thor: Love and Thunder, perhaps restoring the overtly-humorous Thor to his more emotionally-deep persona, and allowing Jane Foster’s Mighty Thor to return.

5 Bruce Banner & Natasha Romanoff Never Saw Any Resolution

The Hulk & Black Widow’s Romance Hasn’t Been Mentioned Since Avengers: Age Of Ultron

Another unusual romance that many would rather see rewritten is that between Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner and Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff. While this relationship could have established a new power couple in the MCU, it boiled down to basically nothing, seeing no resolution whatsoever aside from a throwaway look in Avengers: Infinity War. Deadpool & Wolverine should either revise the MCU’s timeline to the point that the controversial romance between Bruce Banner and Natasha Romanoff doesn’t happen at all, or should perhaps make this relationship official, bringing some great resolution to this massive loose thread in the MCU’s Phase 3.

4 Ultron Deserves More Than Being A One-Off Villain

Ultron Is One Of Marvel Comics’ Longest-Running Villains

Ultron threatening Ulysses Klaue in Avengers Age of Ultron

Since kicking off in 2008’s Iron Man, the MCU has received criticism for wasting many of Marvel Comics’ most iconic and long-lasting villains. The likes of Crossbones, Malekith, the Red Skull and Whiplash have fallen victim to the one-and-done trend, but the biggest loss has to be James Spader’s Ultron from Avengers: Age of Ultron. Ultron is one of the Avengers’ most prominent threats in Marvel Comics, but was killed off after only one project in the MCU, but Deadpool & Wolverine could play off recent theories of Ultron’s MCU return by reviving the villainous artificial intelligence in Phase 5.

3 Spider-Man: Homecoming’s 8 Years Later Mistake Can Be Solved

Spider-Man: Homecoming Created One Of The MCU’s Biggest Plot Holes

Throughout the MCU’s 16-year history, many glaring plot holes have been created, and several of them have gone unresolved. Perhaps the biggest plot hole of all, however, is Spider-Man: Homecoming’s suggestion that the events of the 2016-set film take place eight years after the 2012-set The Avengers. This problem has been addressed several times by Marvel Studios executives in the years since, proving it was just a mistake, but Deadpool will nevertheless likely poke fun at this massive timeline discrepancy. Deadpool & Wolverine can solve this issue, however, and potentially clear up other annoying plot holes from the MCU’s history.

2 Secret Invasion Needs To Be Revisited Properly

Secret Invasion Is One Of The MCU’s Lowest-Rated Projects

Gravik's Super Skrull at the end of Secret Invasion

2008’s Secret Invasion was one of Marvel Comics’ biggest storylines, featuring an all-out Skrull invasion of Earth that caught the attention of most of the Marvel Universe’s superheroes. This made Marvel Studios’ live-action Secret Invasion an exciting prospect, but the 2023 series ended up becoming one of the MCU’s lowest-rated projects, with criticism aimed at its writing, narrative and visual effects. Marvel Studios has ignored the events of Secret Invasion in subsequent projects, most notably The Marvels, but Deadpool & Wolverine could do more by erasing the series’ events entirely, perhaps allowing a more comic-accurate Secret Invasion to be adapted.

1 Kang The Conqueror Confusion Can Be Fixed

Kang The Conqueror’s MCU Future Is Uncertain

In the wake of the Infinity Saga’s conclusion, Kang the Conqueror was teased as Thanos’ Multiverse Saga replacement, with appearances in Loki and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. While this setup was building up to a massive battle between Kang, his variants and the Avengers, in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, Jonathan Majors’ 2023 arrest and conviction threw these plans into jeopardy. Since it’s now unclear whether Kang the Conqueror will be removed completely, or recast for the MCU’s Phase 6, Deadpool & Wolverine could be the best place for Marvel Studios to provide explanation, and clear up any undue confusion.
