10 Kingdoms Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 Can Take Place In (Outside Mushroom Kingdom)

10 Kingdoms Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 Can Take Place In (Outside Mushroom Kingdom)

The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 has the potential to take place in a completely different kingdom, finally moving Mario and the gang outside of the Mushroom Kingdom. The Mushroom Kingdom is the main setting of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the franchise as a whole, but the video game series has also featured all kinds of other locales that would make great backdrops for future Mario movie stories. Thus, The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 should pull from one of these settings, using it to replace the Mushroom Kingdom in the upcoming sequel.

The Super Mario Bros. franchise has always heavily focused on kingdoms, although The Super Mario Bros. Movie did make some changes to this setting structure. In the movie series, every location is a kingdom, with Donkey Kong Island being turned into the Jungle Kingdom and the games’ ice areas being turned into the Snow Kingdom. So, it is possible that The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 could either pull from a video game setting that already has the kingdom label, or it could turn a different area into a kingdom, and these 10 are the perfect candidates for this treatment.

10 Bowser’s Kingdom

Super Mario Odyssey

One of the most obvious settings for The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 to take place in is Bowser’s Kingdom. While the first film does feature a flying airship that supports Bowser’s Castle, most of the games give Bowser an entire realm to rule over, something that isn’t seen in the movies. It is possible that The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 could introduce this area, making Bowser an even scarier villain while also debuting the second most prominent kingdom from the games.

9 Sarasaland

Super Mario Land

Another iconic setting from the Super Mario Bros. series is Sarasaland, with this being the backdrop of Super Mario Land. Sarasaland is a country led by Daisy, meaning that introducing her kingdom to the world of Illumination’s movie series would be a great way to expand on the franchise. Not only would this shake up the setting, but it would also add Daisy to The Super Mario Bros. Movie‘s cast, with this being an exciting pick.

8 Yoshi’s Island

Yoshi’s Island

Yoshi’s Island seems like an obvious pick for a new location in The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2, and it may be happening. The post-credits scene of The Super Mario Bros. Movie teased Yoshi’s appearance in the sequel, meaning that the film could explore the island from the video games. Yoshi’s Island could easily be transported to a kingdom, with either Bowser ruling over it like in the games or an original Yoshi character being its monarch.

7 Rogueport

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

Mario, in an art style that makes him look like paper, traveling with Goombella, a female Goomba with a mining helmet on. The two are on a dirt road heading toward a hostile Goomba. There is a red question mark block floating in the air.

Rogueport is a fan-favorite location from the Mario games, with it being a dirty and crime-ridden harbor town that connects to all kinds of other exciting locales. The story of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is one of the most acclaimed in the franchise, so bringing the second Mario movie to this area would be a perfect shake-up. On top of that, Rogueport has a villainous royal ruler in the form of the Shadow Queen, meaning that this setting would be an interesting parallel to Princess Peach’s rule over the Mushroom Kingdom.

6 Waffle Kingdom

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

Beating the Snifit's mini-game in Paper Mario: The Origami King will free Luigi from the Magic Lamp

Sticking with Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, the game actually features an entire other kingdom that is never seen: the Waffle Kingdom. Throughout the main events of the game, Luigi goes on his own journey off-screen, with him telling Mario about his adventures in the Waffle Kingdom. Setting the second film in the Waffle Kingdom would finally show off this area that has been speculated about for years now, with it also having the potential to give Luigi a greater movie role.

5 New Donk City

Super Mario Odyssey

Donkey Kong was a huge part of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and if the sequel wants to continue expanding on this aspect, then New Donk City is the perfect choice for a new setting. New Donk City is one of the franchise’s latest additions, with it debuting in Super Mario Odyssey and instantly becoming iconic. The appearance of New Donk City would allow The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 to put a uniquely Mario spin on a major city, which is why it would be so much fun for the sequel.

4 Beanbean Kingdom

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga

Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga RPG Video Game

One of the neighboring kingdoms in the Super Mario Bros. franchise is the Beanbean Kingdom, with it being prominently featured throughout the Mario & Luigi RPG series. The Beanbean kingdom is full of unique and exotic settings, fun side characters and villains, and all kinds of danger, meaning that it is the perfect replacement for the Mushroom Kingdom in the upcoming sequel.

3 The Comet Observatory

Super Mario Galaxy

Princess Rosalina in Mario Galaxy surrounded by colorful Lumas

Sending Mario to space is another option for a storyline in The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2, and the perfect hub for this story would be Super Mario Galaxy‘s Comet Observatory. The Comet Observatory already acts as a kingdom, with Princess Rosalina ruling over it and the Lumas acting as her subjects. Super Mario Galaxy is one of the most famous Mario games of all time, meaning that it deserves a spot in the sequel. Plus, adding Rosalina to The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 is a great idea, as she is a fan-favorite character.

2 Subcon

Super Mario Bros. 2

Super Mario Bros. 2

When picking a setting for the second Mario movie, it would make sense to pull from the setting of the second Mario game: Subcon. Subcon is the main setting of Super Mario Bros. 2, with Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Peach traversing through the kingdom to take down its villainous monarch, Wart. Interestingly, the game ends in a twist that Subcon is actually Mario’s subconscious, with the entire game taking place in his dream. This fun twist could work in The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 as well, meaning that it should be added to the games.

1 More Real-World Locations

The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Mario travels to the real world a surprising amount of times in the Mario franchise, with games like Super Mario Land and Mario Is Missing! featuring some real cities and countries. The Super Mario Bros. Movie already featured the real world, with Mario and Luigi’s origins taking place in Brooklyn. Since the real world has already been established, more characters from the Mushroom Kingdom could make their way to the real world, exploring other existing locations in The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2.
