10 James Bond Movies That Mr & Mrs Smith Season 2’s Missions Need To Parody

10 James Bond Movies That Mr & Mrs Smith Season 2’s Missions Need To Parody

Although Mr. & Mrs. Smith isn’t a direct parody of James Bond, there are a few key scenes which seem to reference 007’s most famous missions. The ski trip is probably the most obvious one, but John’s card game reflects Casino Royale, and the meeting in the art gallery is reminiscent of Bond and Q in Skyfall. Like everything in the spy genre, Mr. & Mrs. Smith inevitably draws comparisons to James Bond, whether its similarities are intentional or not. Mr. & Mrs. Smith features chases, fights, special gadgets and dangerous missions, some of which seem to draw inspiration from James Bond.

If there is a Mr. & Mrs. Smith season 2, the show could explore even more of James Bond’s memorable missions, while still doing things in its own way. Mr. & Mrs. Smith features two spies paired together rather than one. It’s as much a relationship drama as it is a spy thriller, and Donald Glover and Maya Erskine’s hilarious dynamic is what makes their missions so different from other spy movies and TV shows. Even if Mr. & Mrs. Smith were to take inspiration directly from James Bond, the constant squabbling between John and Jane would create a more comedic version of 007’s classic missions.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith season 1’s ending leaves John and Jane’s fate unknown, but in their panic room they both agree that they should go on the run. If the couple do survive, they will have to find a safe place for John’s mother. Mr. & Mrs. Smith casts Donald Glover’s real mother as his on-screen mother. If she returns for season 2, Hihi would probably try to use John’s mother to put pressure on him. The entire season could head toward a dramatic finale as John tries to protect his mother from Hihi’s assassins, mirroring the Skyfall Lodge showdown.

9 Tomorrow Never Dies (1997)

John and Jane’s bickering would get even worse if they were handcuffed together

Bond and Wai Lin on a motorcycle in Tomorrow Never Dies

John and Jane are metaphorically handcuffed together due to the nature of their work, but literally chaining them to one another would put their often combative relationship under even more pressure. In Tomorrow Never Dies, Bond is forced to make an escape through crowded streets on a motorbike, but Wai Lin is uncomfortably close by. John and Jane often get in each other’s way when they are out on missions. Even without being tied together, they constantly pull in different directions. Rather than James Bond and Wai Lin’s suave motorcycle chase, John and Jane’s version would probably start an argument.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith’s ski trip mirrors some of James Bond’s most famous missions, and Bond’s underwater fight in Thunderball is just as iconic. A similar scenario in Mr. & Mrs. Smith would be unlike any other mission they have gone on so far, and a secret underwater base wouldn’t fit with the tone of the show, but there are other ways to get John and Jane underwater. Mr. & Mrs. Smith‘s biggest unsolved mysteries, especially those about the origins of Hihi and Bev, hint at a world of espionage that John and Jane only know a fraction of.

7 You Only Live Twice (1967)

Ernst Stavro Blofeld’s volcano lair is one of the most memorable locations in the James Bond franchise. It wouldn’t make sense for a similar villainous base to exist within the tone of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, but John and Jane’s globetrotting adventures could eventually take them to a volcano. Even a subtle nod to Blofeld’s lair would be a fun Easter egg for fans of the espionage genre. In season 1, John and Jane go to the mountains, the woods, and the shores of Lake Como, so season 2 is likely to take them on more adventures to exotic and far-flung locales.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith‘s card game scenes in episode 6 are close to the climactic showdown between Bond and Le Chiffre in Casino Royale, but it’s hard to say whether they are a direct parody. Instead of high-stakes tension, Mr. & Mrs. Smith‘s poker game is used for some lighthearted banter, allowing John to bond with some other men over Mya. Casino Royale‘s opening scene could also be a prime contender for a Mr. & Mrs. Smith parody. The show is filled with thrilling chases, but John and Jane clambering up a crane would be something new and exciting.

Season 1 of Mr. & Mrs. Smith has some shocking deaths, starting with the surprise ending to the first episode. Season 2 will probably need to up the ante if it wants to retain the same shock value, and it could find inspiration in Moonraker. James Bond is pushed out of a plane by Jaws, and he has to wrestle a parachute off of someone in mid air. Bond ultimately survives to fight Jaws another day, and the Smiths will have to get used to dealing with assassins if they want to survive while Hihi is after them.

Although it isn’t among the best James Bond movies, The Man With the Golden Gun provides an unforgettable finale as Bond and assassin Francisco Scaramanga engage in a duel on a secluded beach. This kind of civilized violence wouldn’t naturally occur in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, where the bursts of action seem more frantic and rushed, but such a slow and quiet scene could be even more excruciating given the show’s tone. Mr. & Mrs. Smith has some beautiful filming locations in season 1, so it wouldn’t be unusual for John and Jane to find themselves in a tropical hideaway.

One of James Bond’s most iconic signifiers that has so far been completely absent in Mr. & Mrs. Smith is his modified Aston Martin. Goldfinger features one of the most memorable Aston Martin chases in any Bond movie, but others, including No Time To Die, also show 007’s gadgets, which he uses to evade his pursuers. Although these gadgets may veer too far into sci-fi for Mr. & Mrs. Smith, some kind of anti-pursuit measures would probably aid the Smiths well in their new life on the run, although neither of them have shown any knowledge of engineering.

If John and Jane do survive their shootout with the evil Jane, they will probably come across plenty more assassins from Hihi. Mr. & Mrs. Smith leaves Hihi’s identity unknown, but the evil Jane likens him to a god. She says that whoever he is, Hihi knows their every move before they even make it. Clearly, John and Jane won’t be safe even if they do escape from their New York City brownstone. From Russia With Love‘s train scene could provide the blueprint for a thrilling confrontation between John and Jane and the next wave of super high risk agents.

In retrospect, Sam Mendes’ Mexico City parade scene seems like a warm-up for his World War I epic 1917, since it uses a long take to tell a self-contained story. Mr. & Mrs. Smith is also full of interesting directing choices. For example, the overhead shots of John’s fight in the snow provide an unorthodox view of the action, and season 2 could continue this trend. Any kind of parade would be the perfect setting to mirror the Day of the Dead procession in Spectre. There’s no telling where in the world John and Jane’s next chapter might lead them.
