10 Hardest Puzzles In The Silent Hill Series

Aside from its unsettling atmosphere and disturbing monster designs, Silent Hill has a great storyline and lore that presented part of itself in the two films; and it’s now been announced that there will be a new Silent Hill movie, hopefully releasing in 2023. This means more disturbing content and a character struggling against the challenges they will face in the town of Silent Hill.

The Silent Hill franchise has plenty of challenges players encounter throughout the games, such as the numerous puzzles throughout the journey. Some are relatively easy to figure out, while others are slightly more challenging. However, some have caused plenty of players grief just trying to figure them out, and the first, second, third, and fourth have some of the most challenging puzzles players have to figure out.

Colored Plates (Silent Hill)

The first Silent Hill game was not only the start of what would become a fan favorite horror game series but would be an introduction to the hurdles fans would have to overcome to continue throughout the game. Since it was the first game, it only gave players a taste of how tricky future puzzles could and would be.

Taking on the role of Harry Manson, players explore the Alchemilla Hospital in the forsake town of Silent Hill, where there is a door with eight indents. There are already four inserted, so players must go through the rest of the hospital to find the plates. The one advantage players have is a poem that assists in solving the riddle. But players must also find the poem in the hospital if they want extra help.

Burned Doll Puzzle (Silent Hill 4)

Silent Hill 4 has plenty of hard things for players to overcome. Aside from some of the challenging boss fights and trying to find a way out of Silent Hill, some puzzles can be difficult to overcome.

One of the many objectives in the game is the Burned Doll puzzle. There is a riddle regarding a burnt torso of a mannequin sitting on a wheelchair and to complete it, players must find each body part scattered around Forest World. What makes this so difficult isn’t the mannequin in the wheelchair and putting it together but the fact that players will have to find these parts in very dark areas, making it a much longer process.

Makeshift Handle (Silent Hill 2)

After receiving a letter from his deceased wife, James Sutherland goes to find her in the horrific town of Silent Hill. While players take on the role of James, they experience every terrifying second he spends in Silent Hill and take on the many obstacles that stand in his way.

In the Toluca Prison in Silent Hill 2, players need to get back up to the surface. In order to reach the surface, players need to find three items. These items include a lighter, a wax doll, and a horseshoe, and some of these items are easier to find than others. The only way to make the handle is by burning a specific item and sticking it into something that will form the handle, allowing James to continue.

Louise Box Puzzle (Silent Hill 2)

For players with little to no fear when it comes to horror, Silent Hill 2 isn’t just a great game to play but is also challenging in more ways than one. The game tests the players’ patience, something that is needed when trying to overcome every roadblock that comes their way.

James Sutherland will enter Room S14 of Brookhaven Hospital in Silent Hill during the game. On the bed, there will be a lockbox tied down to it, and it is heavily secured and possesses four different locks that need to be solved to open it. Players need to find two physical keys and two codes in certain sections of the hospital for something that will result in them asking why they had to go through so much trouble of running around and going through every other obstacle for what’s in the box.

Zodiac Puzzle (Silent Hill)

Aside from being one of the scariest 90s horror games, Silent Hill gave players plenty of difficult moments throughout their journey through Silent Hill. One of the many difficulties players would encounter that frustrated many who played the game is the Zodiac.

On the walls are astrology figures with numbers associated with them. The objective is to put the correct numbers beneath the three zodiac figures to receive the Stone of Time. To do so, players must find the pattern between the zodiac signs on the wall and the pillar and apply the correct code on the keypads. Many people were looking for assistance at the time with deciphering the right codes and the patterns between them and the signs, and new players will more than likely need to seek out some as well.

Flame Purifies All (Silent Hill 3)

Silent Hill 3 introduces players to its first female protagonist Heather Mason and her attempt to understand her connection with the eerie town of Silent Hill. It would also be the game where players attempt to understand one of the riddles that have players combine certain objects.

Inside the Otherworld’s Gallery of Fine Arts within the Hilltop Center, there is a painting that players need to find a way to burn. If players have this set on hard, the chemistry book that helps solve it will not be there and can make things much harder since players need to combine elements to complete the task, and the book is very helpful in this situation.

Brookhaven Locked Door (Silent Hill 3)

Aside from the Flame Purifies All puzzle, there is another that is simple in design but can be just as challenging. It also made some players at the time upon its release want to deal with the more terrifying bosses in the game rather than deal with the puzzle.

The passcodes in Silent Hill 3 are listed as poems instead of digits, and when players are in the Brookhaven Hospital, there will be another code they must figure out. If players have the game set to easy or normal difficulties, a chalkboard memo provides clues on the numerical sequence needed to complete it. However, if players have the game set on hard rather than the normal poem, the poem provided is graphic and violent and not as helpful.

Water Tower Puzzle: The Bloody Bed (Silent Hill 4)

Like the three games before it, Silent Hill 4 had plenty of great things going for it. The game had a good storyline and plenty of disturbing monsters that players encountered. It also had plenty of grueling situations that players were placed into.

The Water Tower is one of the first obstacles players come across. Inside the cylindrical building, the Water Prison has three circular floors with eight holding cells on each level. To complete this, players will have to rotate the 2nd and 3rd floors to align them in a certain way so they can jump through the holes to reach the prison’s cafeteria. Players can use a peephole in the central shaft to ensure that everything is aligned correctly.

Coin puzzle (Extra riddle version) (Silent Hill 2)

There are plenty of players who enjoy a good challenge and trying to figure out the ins and outs of how to figure out a riddle. For those interested in doing just that, Silent Hill 2 puts players to the test when the game’s difficulty is on the hardest setting.

In Blue Creek Apartments, players will come across that drawer with a lock that needs to have coins interested into the slots to open the drawer. When playing the game on the hardest difficulty setting, the coins have new symbols on them and an extended riddle that will affect the placement of the coins. The placement at that point is focused more on the faces than anything else and can be extremely hard to figure out.

Piano Puzzle (Silent Hill)

Aside from already being a challenging game for some, Silent Hill provides plenty of obstacles, including the riddles players have to figure out. Some of these just tend to be more tedious than others.

One of the infamous puzzles that many fans found to be extremely challenging is the Piano. The piano players come across has a few keys with blood on them, and to access the Silver Medallion, players must play the piano using the silent keys in the correct order. The issue that many had was the keys and trying to figure out the correct order because the only clue players receive is a poem on a classroom blackboard titled “A Tale of Birds Without a Voice.”
