10 Five Nights At Freddy’s Unanswered Questions & Plot Holes

10 Five Nights At Freddy’s Unanswered Questions & Plot Holes

WARNING: This article contains SPOILERS for Five Nights at Freddy’s.

Although Five Nights at Freddy’s was a hit for fans of the popular video games, it did leave unanswered questions and plot holes that weighed down the narrative. The movie adaptation of the 2014 horror video game focuses on Mike Schmidt as he becomes a night security guard at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria in an attempt to retain custody of his younger sister, Abby. The plot follows animatronics coming to life and ghost children seeking Abby’s soul, as well as Mike searching his dreams for information on what happened to his brother Garrett. Ultimately, Five Nights at Freddy’s ending wraps up most of its main storylines in some fashion.

However, viewers do not gain complete closure by the time Five Nights at Freddy’s credits scene plays. The movie had the challenge of tackling the expansive and complex lore of the video games, and its interest in exploring this meant struggling to flesh out certain storylines and characters. This leaves audiences with loose ends and even plot holes about what actually transpired. As a result, there are looming Five Nights at Freddy’s unanswered questions that go unresolved, some of which might never be fully explained even if the franchise continues.

10 Why Did The Ghosts Start Talking To Abby?

It Began Before The Movie Started

10 Five Nights At Freddy’s Unanswered Questions & Plot Holes

One question audiences have after watching Five Nights at Freddy’s is the connection between the ghost children and Abby. Their connection was never properly explained in the film, even after Abby started drawing pictures of Mike’s dreams and the animatronics before ever meeting them in person. Not explaining how, when, and why the ghost children started talking to Abby and became her imaginary friends at the beginning of the film is disappointing. If a potential Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 has the Schmidt siblings again, it could delve more into how the ghost children connect with living people.

9 How Did William Afton Kill The Children He Kidnapped?

The Villainous Acts Are Not Shown

The shocking revelation that career counselor Steve Raglan turned out to be a child kidnapper and murderer was one of the highlights of Five Nights at Freddy’s. However, there are still questions as to how he carried out his psychotic plans in Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria without being caught. William Afton admitted to killing the five children haunting Mike’s dreams, along with his little brother, Garrett, and stuffing the bodies in the animatronics. However, the movie never explains exactly how Afton killed his victims. In the video games, he lures the children to a secret room using a yellow rabbit suit, but the film never reveals how he initiated the slaughter.

8 What Happened To Aunt Jane?

Her Fate Is A Mystery

Aunt Jane in Five Nights at Freddy's

Aunt Jane’s fate is one of the biggest mysteries to come from Five Nights at Freddy’s. She is last seen at Mike’s house agreeing to babysit Abby, but that night doesn’t end well when Golden Freddy shows up. The ghost child possessing that suit told Abby she was just “sleeping,” but audiences never got to see her character again, even when Mike and Abby were back in their house happily enjoying dinner at the end of the film. Her mysterious fate potentially means Five Nights at Freddy’s wasted its best death, and audiences might not ever know what really happened to this secondary antagonist.

7 What Will Happen To Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria?

The Restaurant’s Future Is Uncertain

Near the end of the film, during William Afton’s springlock failure, the entire building begins to fall apart around the animatronics. There is no real explanation as to why this happened, but one can only assume it’s because Afton no longer has power over the ghost children. Although Mike and Abby manage to escape with an injured Vanessa, audiences don’t get to see the aftermath of Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria. Now that the animatronics can roam free without any powerful influence, the family entertainment is no longer a prison for them. This raises questions about what’s next for the family diner and whether it will be part of upcoming sequels.

6 How Did Golden Freddy Get To Mike’s House?

No One Noticed A Giant Animatronic

Golden Freddy’s Five Nights at Freddy’s cameo was easy to miss for those who haven’t played the original video game, but the character’s actions are also curious. This is because the movie doesn’t account for how Golden Freddy’s broken-down suit makes it to Mike and Abby’s house. The animatronics don’t leave the restaurant because they’re being controlled by William Afton, so Golden Freddy should not have been able to leave. Furthermore, the animatronic surely would have been seen by the public at some point.

5 Will Vanessa Actually Wake Up?

She’s Left In A Coma

Another shocking revelation that surprised audiences was Vanessa being William Afton’s daughter and the possibility that she could die. During the confrontation between Mike and Afton in his Yellow Rabbit suit, Vanessa threatens her father with a gun, only to be stabbed by him as an ultimate betrayal. This serious injury leaves Vanessa in a coma in the hospital, and that is where her story ends. The film doesn’t go into detail about her fate and whether she will survive in upcoming sequels, leaving questions about whether she will wake up and further attempt to redeem herself.

4 Why Did William Afton Kidnap And Kill Mike’s Brother Garrett?

Afton May Have Ulterior Motivations

Garrett's kidnapping scene in Five Nights at Freddy's

What happened to Mike’s brother Garrett in Five Nights at Freddy’s was upsetting and tragic, especially when William Afton revealed that he was the one who kidnapped and murdered the innocent child. Throughout the film, Mike takes sleeping pills to dream about the moment and uncover hidden details that could lead him to the kidnapper. When the true culprit was finally revealed, there didn’t seem to be much motivation surrounding his cruel act. It’s possible that William Afton once knew the Schmidt family and had planned to kidnap the youngest brother, or the family was just in the wrong place at the wrong time when Afton took notice of Garrett.

3 Who Was Possessing Mr. Cupcake?

A possessed animatronic holds out a sentient cupcake in Five Nights at Freddy's movie 2023

Aside from the main animatronics that were in the original video game, Mr. Cupcake is a new character that doesn’t seem to be controlled by any of the ghost children. Audiences might believe that Susie, the young girl possessing Chica, can also control her cupcake prop throughout the movie, but that goes against the established lore. Instead, Chica can be seen carrying Mr. Cupcake around on a plate as the small prop wreaks havoc on those who don’t belong in the family diner. This popular horror franchise could focus more on the sentient cupcake and how it fits into the group of animatronics in future sequels and spinoffs.

2 How Did No One Smell The Rotting Bodies Inside The Animatronics?

Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria Should Stink

Freddy Fazbear, Chica, and Bonnie stand on stage in Five Nights at Freddy's.

The reason why nobody could find the five missing children is because William Afton had stuffed their bodies inside the animatronics: Freddy, Bonnie, Foxy, and Chica. These are places no one would think to look at, making it easier for Afton to hide his crimes and live a double life after the murders. As the family diner closed during the 80s, the children’s decaying bodies remained in the animatronics, which is what led to their souls possessing the restaurant’s mascots. The idea of their corpses going unnoticed for so long seems unrealistic, especially when the police searched Freddy Fazbear’s and couldn’t smell a rotting stench throughout the diner.

1 Do Mike And Abby Have Another Connection To William Afton?

This Could Follow The Games

The Five Nights at Freddy’s video games reveal the protagonist, Mike Schmidt, is actually William Afton’s son. In fact, he had three children, including Michael, Elizabeth, and an unnamed “crying child” who was killed by one of the animatronics. A shocking twist in the film meant that Vanessa was his only named child, which changed everything about the original lore from the games. This Five Nights at Freddy’s twist makes the Mike reveal less likely, but that doesn’t mean Mike has no connection to William Afton whatsoever. Whether the Schmidt siblings connect to Afton in some way is not addressed in Five Nights at Freddy’s.
