10 Character Deaths That Ruined A TV Show, According to Reddit

The Tales of the Walking Dead release date has already been confirmed, and it will premiere on August 14. Fans of the universe of The Walking Dead are excited to see old and new characters in episodes of independent stories and hope the series’ writers will be more careful and invested in characters’ deaths after the questionable passing in the previous series.

From Carl to Glenn, The Walking Dead had many deaths that ruined the show for a lot of fans. However, the series is not the only one to have depicted a death that made viewers turn their screens off for good. Losing a character can make audiences lose interest, and according to Redditors, these deaths completely ruined the TV show.

Carl Grimes – The Walking Dead

Redditor danielcube mentioned “Carl on the walking dead. Mainly because he survives in the comics and they killed him off in the show just so they wouldn’t have to play the actor anymore.” Even series’ fans who didn’t read the comics agree that the show lost its value after Carl’s death.

Killing all the main characters from the first few seasons is a risky move and almost never works out, and The Walking Dead was not an exception to the rule. Most viewers felt that Carl’s death was a transition to what felt like a different series with a whole new cast and ruined the show forever.

Poussey Washington – Orange Is The New Black

Redditor geronimokind mentioned, “Poussey Washington in Orange Is the New Black,” and ihopeyoulikeapples added, “I heard a spoiler that she died and thought that was so stupid that I lost all desire to continue the show,” which spoke for many viewers whose favorite character was Poussey.

Orange Is The New Black had one of the best pilot episodes of the last ten years; however, Poussey’s death meant for some that the series was completely ruined, and that any other good aspect of the series was lost. The death was sad, brutal, and quite shocking due to its plausibility. A lot of people die because of police brutality, and seeing such a beloved character die because of it was too real to bear.

Ragnar Lodbrok – Vikings

Redditor thirstycommentsonly pointed out, “Ragnar’s death ruined Vikings. I know he really died, but Travis Fimmel singlehandedly carried that show.” Vikings is not completely historically accurate, but it is known that Ragnar Lodbrok was a real Viking and the show tries to follow his history as faithfully as possible, including his death.

Given that for four long seasons fans followed the story of the best king of the show, Ragnar, it was almost impossible to keep watching the show after he died. Many fans lost interest, although there were many interesting remaining characters such as Bjorn, Lagertha, and Ivar. Nevertheless, Ragnar was irreplaceable and many felt like the show was never the same again after he left.

Hank – Breaking Bad

Redditor Swankified_Tristan posted, “Hank’s death turned Breaking Bad into one of the saddest shows upon rewatches. So yeah. It was ruined in a really good way. I just wish Hank could’ve won.” A lot of fans may not agree with this perspective and will argue that, despite his death, the show was extraordinarily good. Regardless of the different opinions, all agree that it was one of the most unexpected death in a TV show.

But, it is not such an uncommon opinion that the show’s last episodes decreased their quality in comparison with the series’ first seasons, and a reason behind that was Hank’s death. His murder left many fans disappointed, not only because the bad guys won, but he was the show’s crucial character.

Beth Greene – The Walking Dead

Redditor unproudboyz stated, “Beth on the Walking Dead because it was entirely stupid,” and okidokes added, “Beth’s death was where I stopped. It was a nonsensical death.” The character’s passing was shocking and really disappointing for most.

A lot of viewers saw a lot of potential for her character development and were saddened that she could no longer offer anything else to the show. With yet another interesting character dying, the show kept losing strength, and for some, Beth’s death was good enough of a reason to stop watching it.

Black Canary – Arrow

User Yako_bu commented “Arrow ..Spoilers Killing the Black Canary ruined an already declining show,” and user Kriticul150 agreed, “I’m done with Arrow.” For most fans, Black Canary’s death was unnecessary and most of all, absurd.

The series’ viewers continuously pointed out how it was ridiculous for her character to have died three times before (and revived) only to pass away forever with the lamest death of all. Black Canary was one of Arrow’s bravest characters, and her demise was so disappointing and senseless that it was not worth it to keep watching the show.

Will Gardner – The Good Wife

Will Gardner in The Good Wife

Will and Alicia had such good chemistry in The Good Wife that a lot of people thought of both as one of the main reasons to watch the show. That is why fans like Kellianne mentioned, “The Good Wife when Will Gardener died” as the death that ruined the series.

There was no longer a reason to stay after Will was not on the show. His death was so tragic and sad for most that they didn’t see any sense in finishing the series. When a really beloved character passes away, it is really hard for TV shows to keep audiences interested, and The Good Wife did not achieve the contrary.

Kai Parker – The Vampire Diaries

A deleted Redditor commented, “The Vampire Diaries went back to being kinda boring after Kai Parker died”. He was only on for a season, but for a lot of fans, he really increased the show’s entertainment value. Viewers were really disappointed they didn’t get to see any more of his character, who had proven to be one of the best.

Every show needs a good villain, and even though they are hated, a lot of times antagonists are the ones that make stories worthwhile. They can be really interesting, and audiences will always want to see how the protagonists defeat them. If the villain  is killed too soon, the probabilities are that the show’s interest will plummet, just like it happened with Parker.

Dexter – Dexter

Redditor Big_Aardvark3726 mentioned, “When Dexter dies at the end of New Blood,” and revived the question of why the show would return almost a decade later, only to kill its main character. Dexter fooled audiences once when he pretended to die after driving into a hurricane, so a lot of people second-guessed his second death. Unfortunately, his death is permanent, as confirmed by the showrunner.

It is questionable whether it was necessary to bring back the iconic character for another season, only for that ending. For some fans, it was such a waste of time that it ruined the series completely and destroyed any possible value in rewatchability.

Glenn Rhee – The Walking Dead

Redditor Optimal_Bet9319 commented, “glenn in walking dead,” and met many other fans of the series who could not keep watching the show after their favorite character’s death. Glenn was the series’ most loved individual, and he was killed in such a brutal, gory, and disgusting manner that many fans decided to switch to another series.

The Walking Dead has a lot of zombies and gruesome deaths, but most fans will agree that none of the previous deaths were as barbarous and merciless as Glenn’s. The scene itself is very difficult to watch and provokes multiple flinches in anyone who watches it.
