10 Biggest Surprises That Hardcore Watchmen Fans Didn’t Expect From The HBO Series

While Watchmen season 1 has come to an end, there’s plenty of reasons why we should receive a season 2. Not only was this one of the best TV shows that DC comics has ever produced, but it also provided genuine shocks and surprises throughout.

There were plenty of reveals to dissect from this show and we imagine we will be talking about them for quite some time. However, we’re taking a look at 10 surprises that even the most die-hard fans of the comics and film never saw coming. Spoilers ahead!

LIFE ON MARS

10 Biggest Surprises That Hardcore Watchmen Fans Didn’t Expect From The HBO Series

The assumption from the show and the comics was that Dr. Manhattan was still living on Mars. With footage confirming this, there wasn’t much reason to question the real location that Dr. Manhattan currently resided in.

That didn’t stop some fans from suggesting that he had been on Earth all this time. However, what people didn’t guess was that for some time he hadn’t been on Mars at all but actually a Moon of Jupiter; creating life and a new paradise.

DR MANHATTAN’S IDENTITY

Speaking of Dr. Manhattan, the blue god-like being had many different abilities, but one of them suggested to us was that he could appear human. There was speculation over whether he was actually using this power, which was later revealed to be the case.

One of the surprises that no one could predict though was the true identity of Dr. Manhattan. For some time there had been various guesses, but no one directly pointed the finger Angela’s own husband Cal Abar, who had forgotten his previous life as a god.

SQUID REVEAL

Anyone who has read the comics knows that the giant squid that fell from the sky was as a direct result of Ozymandias. His plan was to kill thousands in order to stop the impending nuclear war and start a new era of peace.

This information was unknown to the public and while there were conspiracy theories, no one knew the truth. However, the show revealed that not only did a large group of people have hard evidence of the event, but that this could be used to finally imprison Adrian Veidt.

HOODED JUSTICE IDENTITY

Hooded Justice

Hooded Justice became a large part of the show, after appearing on a fictional TV program for many episodes. The identity of the man was a great mystery, but it never occurred to fans that it could directly play into the plot of the series.

However, not only was this a major factor of Watchmen but the identity of the person behind the mask isn’t the white man everyone thought. It was actually Will, a black police officer, and grandfather to Angela, who had to hide his identity in order to protect people in his neighborhood.

VEIDT’S DAUGHTER

Adrian Veidt was one of the ongoing villains of the series, although he was trapped away in some far off land. No one predicted that he had actually been on Earth throughout a lot of the show and that he was protected by his own relative.

It turns out that not only was Lady Trieu the illegitimate daughter to Veidt, but she had also preserved him in a gold statue that sat in her own office. Veidt had been there for some years before finally being released back into the world.

LOOKING GLASS’ MASK

Many police officers in the series wear masks in order to stop themselves from being attacked at home by the Seventh Kavalry. Therefore, there are no questions surrounding why Looking Glass actually wore a mask.

However, the choice of mask was strange. The silvery effect was off-putting but there seemed to be no real reason for the choice. It turns out, Looking Glass was subjected to the psychic attack of the squid. The reflective material actually protected him from future attacks.

OZYMANDIAS’ CHOICE

An old Ozymandias in Watchmen

Ozymandias was very clearly trapped against his will in a manor house. The location was predicted to be created by Dr. Manhattan and this was correct. However, no one could have guessed that it was Adrian’s choice to visit this hell.

He wanted to be someone where people worshipped him on a daily basis; a paradise in which he could live out his days in peace. Ironically the choice made him go a little insane and almost as soon as he had arrived he started going mad.

TAKING MANHATTAN’S POWERS

Another concept surrounding Dr. Manhattan was the use of his powers. No fan could have predicted that his abilities could be passed onto someone else, or completely taken against the god’s will. This is exactly what happened in the series.

Not only are multiple people trying to steal the powers from Cal, but he eventually passes them on to his wife, Angela. We don’t know if the eating of the egg was successful, but this was a series of events that no one could have predicted.

JUDD’S BETRAYAL

The series opened with the memorable hanging of the Police Captain Judd Crawford. It seemed like the Seventh Kavalry were behind the attack but there was more to this mystery than it seemed. Not only did Will do it with the use of mind control, but Judd also wasn’t who we thought.

Crawford was actually a member of Cyclops and helped the Kavalry in their mission to exterminate those who they felt were not fit for their neighborhood. He was a sympathizer to the KKK and his death was actually, in part, revenge for those who had been wronged.

BLAKE’S CAREER

Laurie Blake, or the Silk Spectre, made her triumphant return to the Watchmen world, but not in the way we would have expected. The former vigilante wasn’t with her teammates, all of which had disappeared, died or been imprisoned.

Instead, she was working for the FBI. In a twist that no one saw coming, she was actually working as a vigilante hunter which put her in direct conflict with Angela and indeed her own past. Of course, she’s probably moved on from this career path since the events that have taken place.
