10 Biggest Story Reveals From Mortal Kombat 2’s Set Photos

10 Biggest Story Reveals From Mortal Kombat 2’s Set Photos

Several official Mortal Kombat 2 set photos and behind-the-scenes pictures help predict where the sequel is going, which characters will be featured, and how much of the MK games’ lore will be brought into the movie. Mortal Kombat 2’s release date has not been confirmed yet, but the movie’s production is constantly receiving updates on social media through posts from actors and producers. The list of Mortal Kombat 2 characters is quite large, and there are a lot of storylines from the games the sequel can explore.

Mortal Kombat (2021) left a lot to be desired in some aspects. For example, some of the fight scenes were forgettable, and important characters from MK’s canon were not given too much time to shine. That said, Mortal Kombat 2 has all the ingredients to improve upon the first movie, and the behind-the-scenes pictures have all been very promising.

10 Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage Will Have Blond Hair In Mortal Kombat 2

10 Biggest Story Reveals From Mortal Kombat 2’s Set Photos

Karl Urban as Johnny Cage is an inspiring casting choice that, while surprising, makes Mortal Kombat 2 way more exciting. Urban is an incredible actor who has been part of great movies and shows over the years, including but not limited to the modern Star Trek trilogy and Prime Video’s The Boys. Although Billy Butcher is arguably Urban’s most iconic character already, the actor will spot a very different look in Mortal Kombat 2 – something closer to Cage’s appearance in the games. The following set image shared by producer Todd Garner (via X) sees Urban with blond hair and beardless.

9 Baraka Will Be In Mortal Kombat 2

Baraka is one of many Mortal Kombat game characters who did not appear in the 2021 reboot but will show up in the sequel. A set photo shared by producer Todd Garner reveals a chair with “Baraka” written in it, although it does not offer a first look at the character. How much of Baraka will be crafted with practical effects and makeup, and how much of the character will be created with visual effects, remains to be seen. Baraka’s live-action debut happened in 1995’s Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, where he was played by Dennis Keiffer.

8 Mortal Kombat 2 May Focus A Lot On Johnny Cage

The production’s logo ties into Johnny Cage

A behind-the-scenes image shared by Liu Kang actor Ludi Lin on Instagram revealed the logo of Mortal Kombat 2’s production. Whether this will be the movie’s final logo remains to be seen, but it is interesting how it combines the saga’s signature dragon with a green “II.” Green is Johnny Cage’s color in Mortal Kombat, namely because of his green energy powers” that go back to the first game. Thanks to Mortal Kombat’s Arcana concept, a main plot point in the 2021 reboot, it would be easy for the sequel to explain why Cage has powers.

7 Shao Kahn’s Throne Room May Appear

Shao Kahn, the Emperor of Outworld, will be in Mortal Kombat 2. The saga’s ultimate villain will be played by Martyn Ford in what will be the second theatrical interpretation of the character. What role Shao Kahn will have in the Mortal Kombat sequel is difficult to say, especially because the movie is also expected to feature the proper tournament that the first film did not include. That said, it seems like Shao Kahn’s throne room will be featured in Mortal Kombat 2. A behind-the-scenes picture posted by Todd Garner on X sees what appears to be a throne room.

6 Johnny Cage Will Wear His Signature Sunglasses In Mortal Kombat 2

Karl Urban’s characterization is close to the source material

Although it may seem like a small detail, adding little elements commonly associated with the Mortal Kombat characters goes a long way when bringing them to a different media. An official, full look at Karl Urban as Johnny Cage remains to be revealed, but behind-the-scenes pictures like the one recently shared by Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon on X confirm he will be very game-accurate. In addition to the blond hair, Cage will also spot his signature sunglasses at some point in the movie.

5 Netherrealm Is All But Confirmed In Mortal Kombat 2

Mortal Kombat’s Underworld will finally appear

Whereas Mortal Kombat (2021) took place mostly on Earth, with just a couple of scenes set in Outworld, Mortal Kombat 2 may explore more of the game’s lore when it comes to different realms. Netherrealm, the Underworld of MK, was teased in a behind-the-scenes picture shared by Todd Garner. The image reveals a red, rocky ground that looks like it could be from Netherrealm. Given that the first movie skipped most of Scorpion’s origin story, having Netherrealm appear in the sequel would be a great way to establish more of Hanzo’s story, especially with Quan Chi involved.

4 Scorpion Will Return In Mortal Kombat 2

Death does not apply to Scorpion

The very nature of Scorpion’s character means he can easily return in any Mortal Kombat sequel. Although it is not surprising that Scorpion is returning, a set photo posted by Garner highlights Hanzo’s signature kunai. Despite being front and center in all of the posters and trailers, Scorpion did not actually do much in the 2021 film – he only had two fights. Hopefully, there will be at least a couple of “get over here” moments in Mortal Kombat 2. Hiroyuki Sanada’s Hanzo was one of the best things about the reboot and should have a bigger role in the sequel.

3 Shao Kahn & Kitana Will Have Their Signature Weapons

Mortal Kombat 2 is bringing the games’ aesthetic into live-action

Mortal Kombat’s family drama will be brought into the live-action sequel, as both Shao Kahn and Kitana will be in the film. Although the 2021 reboot had a lot of problems, it nailed all the costumes and gadgets. Therefore, it is hardly a surprise that Shao Kahn and Kitana will have their iconic weapons – the steel fans and the Wrath Hammer, respectively. Kitana’s fans come in blue, whereas Shao Kahn’s Wrath Hammer is grey with red stripes around it. Both weapons were revealed by Garner through the following posts on X:

2 Quan Chi Is Making His Live-Action Debut In Mortal Kombat 2

The character almost appeared in Mortal Kombat: Annihilation

Quan-Chi from Mortal Kombat 11 and Scorprion from Mortal Kombat 2021

Almost three decades after his failed debut in Annihilation, Quan Chi will finally be in a theatrical Mortal Kombat movie. Although a scene featuring Qun Chi was filmed for Annihilation, it never made it into the final cut. Now, Quan Chi, who is reportedly being played by Damon Herriman, is set to have an important role in MK 2. The Netherrealm demon’s pale hand was revealed in a behind-the-scenes image shared on X, suggesting the sequel will explore far more of the game’s lore than its predecessor. Quan Chi in Mortal Kombat 2 could tie into Sub-Zero’s return as Noob Saibot.

1 Mortal Kombat 2 Is Remaining Faithful To Johnny Cage’s Backstory

Cage’s signature belt will be in the movie

Mortal Kombat (2021) did not feature Johnny Cage, which raised some concerns as to how the franchise would eventually handle the character. However, from the “ Citizen Cage” poster at the end of the first movie to the recently revealed Johnny Cage belt (as shared by Garner via X), Karl Urban’s character is set to be very faithful to the games not only visually but in terms of lore. Cage appears to be a relatively famous B-movie star, and hopefully, Mortal Kombat 2 will portray him as the outsider who has no clue of what is going on.
