Netflix’s revival of Lost In Space is entering its third and final season. Fans have loved watching the updated adventures of the Robinson family as they try to make a new life in an alien world. Cleaning up some of the cheesier aspects of the 1960s series, Lost In Space has offered a more modern-looking and grittier show for fans to enjoy.
The original series was influential television and many great series have followed in the show’s footsteps. Even though Lost In Space is ending, there is plenty more amazing sci-fi TV to enjoy.
Away (2020) Available On Netflix
Set in the not-too-distant future, Away tells the story of the first manned mission to colonize Mars. An international crew must learn to work together to make the mission successful, despite their many differences.
The show has a more realistic approach to the science of the trip and instead focuses mostly on the interpersonal conflicts between the crew members. The spirit of adventure is alive in the show, as the crew members endeavor to make it to Mars and achieve their mission. Like Lost In Space, Away is not only about exploration, but colonization, as well.
Raised By Wolves (2020 – ) Available On HBO Max
Two androids are forced to raise human children on an alien planet after Earth was destroyed in a war. Along the way, they must walk a tightrope between the human colonist’s beliefs in order to preserve the community.
Raised By Wolves explores many complicated themes regarding human emotions and the relationship between communities. It has been critically well-received and considered one of the best sci-fi shows on TV, according to Rotten Tomatoes. Though it delves into heavy territory, fans of Lost In Space will enjoy the struggle of a community to survive on an alien planet and the drama that comes along with it.
Farscape (1999 – 2003) Available On Prime Video
An American astronaut named John Crichton is accidentally launched across the universe and into the middle of an alien conflict. While trying to help his allies in their fight, the astronaut tries to figure out what went wrong and how he can get back home. Farscape was a unique series in an era that was saturated with interesting sci-fi TV and features strange alien designs and an interesting premise.
The audience is brought along on the adventure as John explores his new surroundings and struggles to return home. Though the show is about exploration, it is also about longing for community and the desire to find a home in an alien galaxy. Despite running for several seasons, Farscape still remains one of the best lesser-known sci-fi shows of all time.
The Expanse (2015 – Present) Available On Prime Video
In the distant future, the delicate balance of peace in the solar system is maintained by a council of representatives. As each major power in the system jockeys for position, the heroes must untangle a complicated web of conspiracy that threatens to plunge the system into total war.
Diplomacy and interpersonal conflict are front and center in The Expanse, and it is less focused on high-tech gadgets and exploration and more on the conflicts that arise between major powers. The suspense of the show and the slowly unraveling mystery will keep viewers engaged throughout the lengthy series.
Nightflyers (2018) Available On Netflix
In 2093, a crew of astronauts embarks beyond the edge of the solar system to make contact with alien life. However, the further they travel, the more the events turn sinister and violent.
While most sci-fi shows play with suspense, Nightflyers turns the suspense up with each episode. More frightening than most sci-fi shows, it depicts space not as an exciting new frontier to explore but a terrifying place of isolation. Though different from Lost In Space in many ways, Nightflyers offers a different take on space exploration that hadn’t been considered before.
Foundation (2021 – ) Available On Apple TV+
Foundation is set in the distant future and tells the story of the ongoing saga of humankind to overcome all of the things that hold it back. Set over millennia, the series has a far-reaching scope and almost endless possibilities for the progress of humankind.
Though somewhat complicated with its themes, Foundation still manages to give sci-fi fans everything that they look for, whether that be space exploration, alien life, or cool gadgets.
Another Life (2019 – ) Available On Netflix
A group of astronauts explores space in search of the origin of an alien artifact that was discovered on Earth. Along the way, they encounter dangers that put them at risk of never returning home again.
Another Life is a perfect blend of sci-fi concepts. While the idea of exploring space is exciting it is also undeniably dangerous. With a mystery plot concerning an alien artifact added in, the show becomes a well-rounded sci-fi drama.
Babylon 5 (1993 – 1998) Available On HBO Max
The Babylon 5 space station is the setting for the series of the same name. Onboard, interplanetary conflicts are carried out on a personal level between the representatives of those alien worlds. Babylon 5 focuses on the difficulties of diplomatic relations between worlds, as well as weaving in a complicated mystery about purpose and identity.
In the Babylon 5 universe, space is not only a place of exploration and discovery but also a dark place of many dangers. Ultimately though, the biggest dangers come from within the ship and all of the disparate species that must coexist together onboard.
Battlestar Galactica (2004 – 2009) Available On Peacock
The surviving population of the 12 human space colonies lives aboard the military vessel Battlestar Galactica that is searching for the fabled 13th colony called Earth. As they search, they are stalked by the deadly Cylons who were responsible for wiping out most of humanity in the colonies.
Battlestar Galactica offered fans the perfect mixture of classic sci-fi concepts and tense interpersonal drama that gave the show its flavor. Battlestar was also a modern re-telling of a show from the 1970s, which gave older fans what they wanted while modernizing the concept to suit newer viewers. Though the original sci-fi TV series only lasted one season, the revival got a full run, as well as several spinoffs and films.
Star Trek: Voyager (1995 – 2001) Available On Prime Video
Star Trek, as a franchise, is ultimately about exploration, and Star Trek: Voyager exemplifies that theme perfectly. A newly commissioned starship is hurled across the galaxy with its crew and a band of rebels in tow. Discovering that they are decades away from Earth, the crew must navigate uncharted space in an attempt to return home.
Voyager gives fans of the franchise a fresh new look at Star Trek and pits the characters against the elements more so than any other series. Along the way, the series consistently delivered great characters and storylines. Like Lost In Space the crew of Voyager is exploring unknown territory in an attempt to survive.
