1 Netflix Problem Will Stop Wednesday Becoming The New Stranger Things

While Wednesday season 2 could have seen the hit show become Netflix’s replacement for Stranger Things, one production problem stands in the way of this plan. Wednesday proved a huge success when the series debuted in November 2022. Starring Jenna Ortega as the sardonic antiheroine Wednesday Addams, Wednesday was a mature re-imagining of The Addams Family that saw the clan’s breakout star solve a supernatural murder mystery at a magic boarding school. While Wednesday had its issues, the Netflix series was a massive hit that increased Ortega’s profile and left viewers clamoring for more from the show’s famous director, Tim Burton.

However, audiences who hope to see Wednesday season 2 soon are in for a long wait. The second season of the popular series will not be released until 2025, meaning there will be over two years between season 1’s arrival and its follow-up. This isn’t necessarily going to be a major issue for the show, but it will have some impact on its second season. Ortega and her co-stars will be older for season 2, but thankfully, they were already playing mature teenagers. Still, Wednesday season 2 may need to add a time jump between the two outings.

Several Netflix series have been delayed due to strikes and other circumstances with some hugely popular series not likely to air until 2025.

Wednesday Could Be The Next Stranger Things (But Its Release Plan Presents A Challenge)

Although these issues aren’t guaranteed to derail the show, Netflix is still leaving viewers with a very long wait after the cliffhanger in Wednesday season 1’s ending. Netflix’s earlier coming-of-age hit, Stranger Things, is now able to get away with large gaps between seasons, seeing as its early release schedule was very different. Stranger Things season 1 and season 2 came out within around a year of each other, with the show debuting in summer 2016 and its first follow-up arriving in October 2017. These two seasons provided enough audience goodwill for much longer gaps later on.

There were three years between Stranger Things season 3’s 2019 release and season 4’s 2022 arrival, and there will be another three between season 4’s release and season 5. However, Stranger Things had a chance to hook audiences and sell them on the world and characters of the series in season 2 before the show ever went off the air for a long period. While Wednesday’s cast of characters was memorable enough in season 1, the show doesn’t have that advantage. This may prevent the long-awaited Wednesday season 2 and any subsequent outings from landing with audiences.

Stranger Things Had An Advantage That Wednesday Simply Doesn’t

Stranger Things won over audiences before taking a multiple-year hiatus while, in contrast, Wednesday released only a single season before offering viewers a three-year wait. It is entirely possible that Wednesday’s loyal fanbase won’t be bothered by this release schedule and will still rush to stream the second season when it does arrive in 2025. However, it is also very possible that Wednesday won’t be able to replicate the overwhelming success of Netflix’s earlier supernatural coming-of-age dramedy. Stranger Things had viewers hooked before its big break, whereas Wednesday may have taken a long hiatus too early in its story.
