1 Glen Powell Line In Twisters Continues A Theme Started With The Return Of This $1.5 Billion Franchise

1 Glen Powell Line In Twisters Continues A Theme Started With The Return Of This .5 Billion Franchise

The new CinemaCon footage from Twisters features a telling line from Glen Powell’s character that recalls the underlying theme of the last classic franchise reboot that Powell was a part of. Set to be released on July 19, 2024, Twisters is the long-awaited sequel to Twister in which a couple of storm chasers will risk their lives to test a new weather alert system. Minari’s Lee Isaac Chung is directing the legacy sequel from a script by The Revenant’s Mark L. Smith.

Some new footage from Twisters has been released at CinemaCon, giving a clearer idea of Powell’s character and the theme at play in the sequel. The footage begins at a rodeo that’s being evacuated due to a tornado alert. Daisy Edgar-Jones’ character, Kate, sees a truck being lifted into the sky by the tornado. Anthony Ramos’ character, Javi, convinces Kate to resume her old storm-chasing lifestyle, and they join Powell’s character, Tyler, and his storm-chasing crew. Powell has a line in the footage that could suggest what Twisters’ theme will be – and it’s the same as Powell’s last franchise reboot.

Twisters’ Glen Powell Character Relies On Old Ways To Do His Job

When Kate and Javi join Tyler and his team in the CinemaCon footage from Twisters, Tyler says that his crew doesn’t need fancy PhDs and newfangled technologies, and that sometimes the old ways are better than the new. This seems to point to the thematic undercurrent of Twisters: the new ways of doing things aren’t always superior to the old ways. This is the same theme that played into the last legacy sequel that Powell starred in.

Top Gun: Maverick Had A Similar Theme About Old Tech Being The Most Reliable

Glen Powell as Hangman looks on blankly in a scene from Top Gun: Maverick.

Twisters’ theme of favoring the old, traditional methods over new techniques and technologies is shared by Powell’s last legacy sequel, Top Gun: Maverick. Powell appeared alongside Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick in the role of LT Jake “Hangman” Seresin – this generation’s Iceman; the rogue with a heart of gold – who swooped in to save Maverick and Rooster when they had enemy fighters on their tail. Twisters and Top Gun: Maverick have more in common than just Powell’s involvement.

In the final act of Top Gun: Maverick, after Maverick’s commanding officers have spent the whole movie praising their new fighter jets, it’s the old jet from the original Top Gun that gets Maverick and Rooster out of a jam. It will undoubtedly be the same in Twisters, that the old tech will come in clutch in the second long-awaited sequel to star Powell. Twisters could be this year’s Top Gun: Maverick.
